Around noon the following day they rode into a small, mud-walled city surrounded by fields still lush and green. There seemed to be a lot of traffic going the other way, though. Huge carts rumbled past them. Herds of livestock ambled along the crown of the road. Old ladies stomped past carrying entire households and haystacks on their backs.
âPlague?â said Rincewind, stopping a man pushing a handcart full of children.
He shook his head. âItâs the star, friend,â he said. âHavenât you seen it in the sky?â
âWe couldnât help noticing it, yes.â
âThey say that itâll hit us on Hogswatchnight and the seas will boil and the countries of the Disc will be broken and kings will be brought down and the cities will be as lakes of glass,â said the man. âIâm off to the mountains.â
âThatâll help, will it?â said Rincewind doubtfully.
âNo, but the view will be better.â
Rincewind rode back to the others.
âEveryoneâs worried about the star,â he said. âApparently thereâs hardly anyone left in the cities, theyâre all frightened of it.â
âI donât want to worry anyone,â said Bethan, âbut hasnât it struck you as unseasonably hot?â
âThatâs what I said last night,â said Twoflower. âVery warm, I thought.â
âI shuspect itâll get a lot hotter,â said Cohen. âLetâsh get on into the city.â
They rode through echoing streets that were practically deserted. Cohen kept peering at merchantsâ signs until he reined his horse and said, âThish ish what Iâve been looking for. You find a temple and a priesht, Iâll join you shortly.â
âA jeweler?â said Rincewind.
âItâs a shuprishe.â
âI could do with a new dress, too,â said Bethan.
âIâll shteal you one.â
There was something very oppressive about the city, Rincewind decided. There was also something very odd.
Almost every door was painted with a large red star.
âItâs creepy,â said Bethan. âAs if people wanted to bring the star here.â
âOr keep it away,â said Twoflower.
âThat wonât work. Itâs too big,â said Rincewind. He saw their faces turned toward him.
âWell, it stands to reason, doesnât it?â he said lamely.
âNo,â said Bethan.
âStars are small lights in the sky,â said Twoflower. âOne fell down near my home onceâbig white thing, size of a house, glowed for weeks before it went out.â
âThis star is different,â said a voice. âGreat AâTuin has climbed the beach of the universe. This is the great ocean of space.â
âHow do you know?â said Twoflower.
âKnow what?â said Rincewind.
âWhat you just said. About beaches and oceans.â
âI didnât say anything!â
âYes you did, you silly man!â yelled Bethan. âWe saw your lips going up and down and everything!â
Rincewind shut his eyes. Inside his mind he could feel the Spell scuttling off to hide behind his conscience, and muttering to itself.
âAll right, all right,â he said. âNo need to shout. IâI donât know how I know, I just knowââ
âWell, I wish youâd tell us.â
They turned the corner.
All the cities around the Circle Sea had a special area set aside for the gods, of which the Disc had an elegant sufficiency. Usually they were crowded and not very attractive from an architectural point of view.
