Chapter Twenty-Four

I was exhausted.

I was some word beyond exhausted, but I didn’t sleep. Not even the warmth of Erise and Leora in a spare bed in Orineel’s home with me could get me to allow myself to sleep despite it being more than better than a fire.

It was only when I heard the main door open and then quietly close and his breathing inside the space that I considered potentially doing as much.

I heard no footsteps moving closer to the spare room, but breathing, yes. His breathing did move closer, to where it was just on the other side of the door.

I thought about getting out of bed, or trying to do as much with two Valwen on either side of me.

I would surely wake them.

I just wanted to tell him that I was sorry.

I did little more than mouth it, and yet . . .

On the other side of the door, there was barely a whisper of, “I apologize. Please get some rest.”

I glanced over, meaning to just glance, but I realized Leora’s eyes were open. She offered me an apologetic glance.

I again mouthed . . . I’m sorry.

For waking her.

She shook her head.

I looked on my other side, to Erise.

She was still out. Out and now latched onto my side.

I shook my head, but I patted hers, and though she was fast asleep . . .

Her skin illuminated faintly.

I smiled, and I finally settled in for sleep.
