SISSY

The invitation to Sarah Anne’s Christmas party never came in the mail, but Sissy hadn’t been surprised. Truthfully, she’d been too worried about her mama’s health to care.

But then J.D. caught word of it at work. He’d come home asking about it, and when she told him they hadn’t officially been invited, he’d demanded to know why.

“You two might have some ridiculous fight going on, but that won’t keep me from going and having a good time. Mark will expect me to be there. I guarantee he doesn’t have a clue what that crazy wife of his has been up to.”

So Sissy had resigned herself to going to the party. She’d been on edge all week, nerves shot with worry over how J.D. would act. Normally, at their own end-of-the-year party, J.D. didn’t drink much since it was during the day and with a bunch of little kids. A holiday cocktail party was something else entirely.

Sissy hadn’t slept more than a few hours for the past couple of nights, and she’d had to use every makeup trick she knew to hide the dark circles under her eyes.

So now here they were, with that obnoxious New Yorker slinking around, listening in on their conversation before they’d even come in the door. Sissy just pretended she wasn’t even there.

She had to admit that Sarah Anne had recovered quickly from the shock of seeing them at the door. She, at least, had some class. That didn’t mean Sissy wasn’t planning to corner her at some point tonight when she had a couple of drinks and demanded to know what the hell her problem was. The thought of that brought a smile to Sissy’s face. She may not have any control over her husband’s behavior, but nothing made her feel more confident than a good confrontation. Especially since most people she knew were complete cowards who spooked the moment she spoke to them directly.

Sissy watched with arms crossed as Mark fixed J.D. a bourbon on the rocks. A few of those, and they’d be on their way to a repeat of dinner a few weeks ago. Only this time, it would be witnessed by everyone at the preschool. A sweat broke out on Sissy’s back, and she felt a bead trace uncomfortably down her spine.

She took a sip of her club soda and lime to try and cool off. Her attention shifted to others in the room. There were the usual exercise-obsessed moms, showing off their lean arm muscles and strangely muscular legs in short dresses.

That’s not what men like, she heard her mama’s voice say with a trademarked sneer. Not enough cushion for the pushin’.

Sissy gave her head a little shake to remove her mama’s words from her mind. Her mama could be crasser than a sailor.

A loud voice with a grating accent drew her attention for a moment, and she saw a man with dark hair talking animatedly to Mark, using plenty of hand motions. His accent was similar enough to Maria’s that Sissy figured this must be her husband.
