An insurance policy? Connected? What did Rae mean?

Rae had maneuvered past her attorney and was back in Felix’s face, taunting him, her voice sharp and filled with accusation. Felix stared her down, provoking her with a condescending grin. As they faced each other, their bodies were coiled knots of rage waiting to explode.

Rae let loose, flinging her fists at her husband as he laughed at her. A tall hulk of a man in security garb rushed toward the estranged couple, easing his body in front of Felix, hands raised, as Rae’s attorney pulled at her shoulders, inching her back. The security guard had forty pounds and at least six inches on Felix and, by the looks of him, could knock him flat in seconds if rational methods were ineffective. And there was also the gun on his belt, if absolutely necessary. Felix dodged, trying to sidestep the guard while screaming obscene insults at his wife, but the guard matched his moves.

I recognized the court officer from my legal days and knew Felix didn’t have a chance, but did Felix know that?

Observers had gathered on the fringes in small groups drawn to the noise, watching the live car crash that this marriage had become and waiting for blood to be drawn. Divorce brought out the worst in people, and these courthouse walls had seen their share of couples on the verge of blows. And often, just as quickly, the confusing 180-degree reversal and regret that only love could bring, dissolving anger into a tearful embrace. It was hard to imagine this pair back in each other’s arms begging for another chance, but stranger things had happened.

“Calm it down, buddy,” the guard said to Felix. “You don’t want this going any further south than it has. Adding assault charges to your divorce won’t play well. It ain’t worth it, man. Step away so you can both cool off.”

Felix shot his eyes at the guard and then his wife, working out the odds, I presumed. The attorney had managed to back Rae about ten feet away, quieting her enough that she no longer fought him, but he still held her by the shoulders as he spoke quiet words of appeasement on the off chance she had not depleted herself of rage.

“You’re right,” he huffed. “She ain’t worth it. I got more important things to do than listen to her bitching.”

Felix unflexed his hands and cracked a knuckle, then gave his wife one more scalding look before turning and heading toward an exit.

Rae was still huddled with her attorney and although not yet pacified, it didn’t appear she was going to follow her husband and drag the fight into another inning. I didn’t know their full story, but it sure sounded like she thought she could do some damage to Felix if she wanted. Interesting.

Wisely, the security guard was sticking around until it was obvious that both parties were under control. With Felix now out of the building, he watched Rae cautiously while hustling onlookers along and assuring them that there was nothing more to see.
