I wasn't about to complain about his decor, though. I sat down across from him with Ivara by my side.

The mayor began speaking, his hands held behind his back in a formal posture. "Your powers are impressive. The villagers may fear you, but they certainly owe you their gratitude. It is only because you intervened that such an evil was stopped." He took a short breath, then continued, "As far as I and those I lead are concerned, you are welcome here for however long you desire. My own abilities are limited, but I'm happy to lend my services and my strength to assist you in whatever way you need. However, as with anyone else who enters the village, there are laws which must be followed, and rules of conduct which cannot be bent or broken."

I raised my eyebrows at him, wondering just how badly he could screw us over if he really wanted to.

Ivara cut him off, saving me from my own sarcastic comments. "You're sure he's dead?" she asked.

"The Vanguard? Absolutely. If Kedric here doesn't take his place, we should be safe. For some time, at least."

Take his place. Like, become the new Vanguard. Yeah, not happening.

"It was my understanding," Ivara said, "that we would only find help when we arrived here. Are you saying there is no one powerful enough to defeat them?"

The mayor's ears flicked.

Ivara sighed. "So you'd prefer to hide yourselves away instead of living free? What if those 'warriors' return here tomorrow?"

Mayor Vantav nodded. "Of course. I am open to whatever plans you come up with, but we need time to discuss among ourselves too."

I patted Ivara on the back, though I didn't blame her. If someone showed up who could turn all those Druzha into pulp, I'd probably stay away from them as well.

After a round of goodbyes, the Mayor and a couple members of the council invited us inside. They settled themselves around a wooden table and sat in silence for a while.

Mayor Vantav cleared his throat and said, "So, the two of you seem to have a plan. Or at least a destination."

"Yes," Ivara replied. She took my hand in hers. "Kedric is leading me to The Source. His people — yours too, once upon a time — may hold the answer to how we end these attacks."

The Mayor's eyes grew wider as Ivara told him more and more of her story. At the end of it, he stared at the ceiling for a time, scratching his whiskers thoughtfully. After a few minutes had passed, he returned his gaze to us and asked, "Have either of you stopped to wonder why that
