CHAPTER TEN

Stephanie floated the cats—and Vishlog—out of the dining hall. Brilgus declined the offer, and his guards breathed a sigh of relief.

V’ritan soothed the chef’s ruffled feathers and his guards guided the man to the kitchen again and promised him the dining hall would be returned to order before the meal. The rest of the evening went without a hitch.

The Garghilum Afreghil was still laughing about it when Stephanie escorted him to the shuttle the next morning. “I’d call it a meeting of minds, but it truly wasn’t.” He chuckled and glanced at Brilgus, who followed more slowly. The Standard Bearer’s face was pale, and his pupils were still wide.

“Will he be all right?” she asked, and he gave her a comforting smile.

“The healers are on stand-by for when we reach the King’s Warrior.” He turned and clasped her hands in his own. “Thank you for inviting us on this endeavor. I wouldn’t have missed it for all the worlds between us.”

“Or around us,” Brilgus added to finish the Meligornian saying in a tired voice.

When she looked at him, he gave her a weary smile. “Who knew pets could be so much trouble?”

“These are more trouble than most,” she informed him, and he gave a soft sigh of relief.

“See?” he asked V’ritan. “It is not a good thing to judge all cats by the behavior of these two.”

V’ritan frowned. “Not on The King’s Warrior,” he admonished, and his tone of voice said the argument was an old one.

They reached the shuttle bay and the two cats in question trotted beside Marcus and Garach and looked like butter wouldn’t melt in their mouths.

“Don’t let them fool you,” she added. “If they thought they could get away with it, they’d find mischief right now—and Captain Rawlins has already said she’ll have their furry hides for throw rugs if they upset her chef one more time.”

Both cats looked away from her and curled their lips in identical looks of sheepish chagrin. Zeekat followed it by laying his ears flat against his skull and he slanted a rebellious look toward her.

“Oh,” Brilgus said when he caught the expression on the cat’s face. “I think I see.”

V’ritan hoped he did because there was no way under Selene’s Grace he would ever allow the man to have a sidekick like either of Stephanie’s two beasts. Not on his ship or anywhere near his ship, now that he thought about it.

He was glad neither of them had caused mischief the last time they’d visited. Next time, he’d have precautions in place.

The Knight made the translation to Meligornian space from just outside the Tempestarii and Stephanie took them to the observation deck so they could watch the Gargantuan-Class dreadnought fade from sight.

“And the Navy has no idea?” the Garghilum Afreghil asked.

Stephanie shook her head. “We’d like to keep it that way a while longer,” she advised him, her tone a request as well as confirmation.

He placed a hand on her shoulder. “I understand,” he reassured her, and they stood in silence while the Knight translated and the Tempestarii faded to nothing.
