we giggle.

This time Sipho has to climb very high to reach

the branches that hold the golden lemons.

He scratches

his leg and

starts to wail.

‘Don’t cry, Sipho.

Soon we will be eating

delicious pancakes,’

I remind him.

‘Let’s get the milk.’

Before Sipho has a chance to wipe his nose,

we are off, scampering down the road

to where Mama Futhi lives.

‘Mama Futhi!’ I call. ‘We have some lemons for you.’

A chicken in the front yard stops pecking

to peer at me.
