36 MOZARE

Mozare was only back at the barracks for a few hours before he had another reason to return to the hideout. He was slightly worried about how Revon would react to his news, especially since he hadn’t been civil at their last meeting. But this was important information, something that threatened the entirety of their rebellion.

He knocked and used the newest password to gain entrance to the stronghold. The guard was shocked to see him, and it made him wonder what information Revon shared about him after his last meeting. He didn’t have time for gossip, but the thought of Revon spreading rumors about him didn’t sit well. He pushed the feeling away. His reason for coming was more important.

“He doesn’t want any visitors tonight.”

“I only have tonight. And he’s going to want to hear what I have to say.”

“He’s in his temple.”

That was another thing Mozare didn’t agree with. No one had any more claim to the gods than someone else. Revon keeping a private temple bordered on blasphemy. Mozare was one of only a few people who even knew where it was. He had voiced his worry shortly after joining, but the leader had explained that his piety, the way he was raised, had no place in the stronghold. Revon needed to know what the gods wanted of him, and so he thought it was important for him to have private, unencumbered access to them.

He turned down one of the collapsed tunnels, carefully ducking under broken pieces of the ceiling and pushing through crisscrossed lumber. Hidden behind the rubble was a small, carved-out room where Revon knelt, his left palm facing up as he called on Ilona for guidance.

As he stepped into the rudimentary space, Mozare could feel the goddess’ energy calling to him. As much as he hated ignoring her call, he needed to speak to Revon as soon as possible in case Saiden went looking for him. It was a huge risk, coming on the night before a mission, but he was placing his bets that she would stay at the castle for the night to prepare guards to take over in her absence.

From behind him, Mozare could see Revon slump as he left the trance he was in.

“The Goddess sent me away because she felt you here,” he said, anger lacing his voice. He did not turn to look at Mozare. “Her favored child refusing to speak with her. And you believe me to be the blasphemer.”

“We need to speak. I will offer recompense to Ilona later. She will understand.”

He knew her wrath could span centuries, but she would understand. She wouldn’t want unjust harm to come to her children because of the actions of bigoted people.

“Saiden and I are being sent on a mission.”

“I thought the world-ender had been charged with the queen’s personal protection.”

Mozare bristled at the old nickname for Saiden.

“She fought for the right to run this mission, signed and sealed by Her Majesty herself. She will be given leave for the time it takes.
