Chapter 10

FROM ZEL'BORDAN HILL, MARYDYTH MADE HER way south to the coast. Farming and fishing communities were sprinkled throughout the region, and she spent most nights in one town or another. There were few problems for her to solve. Mostly, she acted as a mediator when an impartial observer was needed. The Kingdom Sheriffs and Magistrates that the Minister of Justice employed were quite skilled at keeping the peace. There were, however, exceptions.

The town of Bain's Bridge was a small fishing and farming community on the banks of the Zel'Caris River. The Zel'Caris was a major spawning pathway into the mountains, and people had been harvesting fish there since pre-imperial times. Marydyth rode into town as Arandar was setting, and into a fight.

Shouting in the distance warned her, and she galloped down the road with Sang Del Dracl in her hand. Approximately thirty men fought in the main street. No swords were evident, but all parties were using farm implements ranging from mattocks to scythes with great skill.

Marydyth pulled the Leggett to a halt and stood in her stirrups. She shouted, "Hold!" and the sound of her high voice cut through the shouting of the men. "Hold your hands in the name of Justice!"

The shock of a woman's voice invoking Justice caused the men to back away from one another, forming two distinct groups. "What is going on here?" Marydyth asked, glaring back and forth between the groups. "Who started this?" Both sides began shouting, causing her to again call for silence. "You and you," she shouted, pointing to a man from each group with Sang Del Dracl, "come here."

The two men came before her, each glancing sullenly at the other. "Now, one at a time, what is going on here? You first." She pointed at the man to her left.

"It's them Del'Jarvins. They been thievin' our stock again."

"Liar!" the second man immediately shouted. "We ain't took nothin' that's yours. It's you what's been thievin' from us!" Men from both sides immediately began shouting again, and several took menacing steps toward the others.

"Silence!" Marydyth shouted as she glared at them, and again they backed away. "I will see about this. Until then, anyone who starts a fight faces me."

"Who are you to interfere with us?" a voice shouted.

“I am Knight of Justice Marydyth Zel’Karyn,” she replied, and for a change took grim satisfaction at their reaction. A hush fell as men backed away from her. Murmurs of “Mary Death” whispered through the crowd.

"Where is the mayor?" she asked, and the men to her left cleared a pathway to where a man was lying face down in a pool of blood.

"This be Mayor Jordy Del'Keldan, Lady Mary Death."

Marydyth stared in shock for a moment, then looked about. "The Sheriff?" A lane cleared through the other side to show a man with a scythe-blade through his chest.

"This be Sheriff Helbar Del'Jalvin," a man said, glaring at the men across the street.

Marydyth was bewildered by this turn of events. "Is there anyone of rank in this town?"

There was a general shaking of heads on both sides.
