Chapter 15
A cold wind whistled through the trees and across the graveyard, buffeting them with its icy breath. In less than a minute, the temperature felt as if it had dropped ten degrees.
“So, what the hell is the connection?”
“‘Master of the Tree of Life,’ it says. Do you know anything about the Tree of Life?”
“No. I suppose this is important, right?”
“Biblically, it is an instrument of God, originally placed in the Garden of Eden. The key to everlasting life. It’s first written about in the book of Genesis—I’m sure you know that story. Then, in Revelation 2:7, we’re told that whoever is filled with the Holy Spirit will partake of its fruit. But unlike most traditional religious institutions, Kaballistic teaching takes into consideration the complexity of the original Hebrew language when addressing the subject of the Tree of Life. According to the Kaballah, the Tree of Life is a symbol of every plane of existence, both physical and nonphysical, with its roots being the moment of creation, and its branches leading to everything that exists, even beyond all known time and space. Someone who is a ‘master’ of the Tree of Life would be able to traverse dimensions at will. It is the goal of any student of high magick to understand and utilize the Tree—almost like a road map—as a means of making his will become reality.”
“So why the hell was Matt’s ring lying in LeBeau’s partially dug-up grave?”
She shrugged. “I might have an idea.”
“You going to tell me about it?”
“Not yet. But I would not take it a good sign.”
“Then I wish you’d explain …”
“Not yet, Barry. I could be wrong.”
He sighed heavily. “This is one piece of the puzzle I’d just as soon turn over to the sheriff. This is hard evidence that Matt has either been here or someone took this from him and put it here deliberately.”
The wind began blowing harder, and the sky darkened. Barry saw that a huge mass of gray-tinged cumulus clouds had gathered over the face of the sun. With the new darkness, he began to feel a strange sense of dislocation, the way he sometimes felt during a particularly disturbing dream: as if everything, no matter how familiar, seemed alien, bearing a distinctly malevolent face. Again, the sensation of being watched by hidden eyes seized him with almost nauseating intensity, and when he looked at Jennifer, he saw that her face was pale, her eyes wide and bright. Obviously, she shared his feelings.
“Let’s go back to the car,” she said. “Whatever is here is not friendly.”
“I agree. This cemetery doesn’t seem quite so ‘beautiful’ any more.”
They walked quickly down the hill, toward the path that led through the woods. With every step, Barry felt more lightheaded, as if this landscape were somehow an illusion, a mere painted canvas that threatened to rip itself apart at any moment. They picked up their pace as if by unspoken agreement. Jennifer’s slightly bent leg did not seem to hamper her progress.
As they stepped into the shadows of the thick woods, Barry looked back toward the spot they had just left.
