“Shit. Shit, shit, shit.” Lu placed her gun in its lockbox and slammed the trunk shut. “Shit.” She got in the car, started the engine, and turned on the radio. Maybe music could distract her from the shitstorm of a situation she found herself in. Her job was on the line if she didn’t give her boss what he was after, and Isla just kept hand-feeding her exactly that.

On one hand, that was great. It meant her time in Bender wasn’t for naught. She was producing results and getting the job done. When she’d initially been transferred to the CIA’s Supernatural Division, she’d felt delighted. The gossip mill had been hot with talk about a new department, but no one knew specifics, and no one could just apply. The CIA decided whether or not you were worthy, and when Lu received her transfer email, she thought she’d hit the lotto. Until the day she arrived in a new state with new orders and found out she was about to investigate the boogeyman. Her training felt like a joke, and the first three months on the job seemed like some elaborate prank reality TV setup. But now? She was gathering evidence at warp speed and literally had her hands on a real witch.

However, Isla was caring, strong, generous, and understanding. Isla wanted to help people and make the community a better place, all noble and positive traits. Lu knew in her gut Isla wasn’t looking to hurt anyone, human or not, but proving Isla’s innocence wasn’t her mission as an agent. Her job—her duty—was to report back any being or incident that was otherworldly. Simple, but why did doing her job feel so wrong?

“What am I going to do?” She looked at the time. “Twelve hours.” She had Isla to consider, Ronan to worry about, and a job to keep. “Ronan.”

Lu pulled out her phone and composed a message. She smiled at the little emoji next to Isla’s name, and the familiarity of the simple first name warmed her heart. She typed out the message and tried her best to keep her tone light. The last thing she wanted to do was alert Isla to anything else going on. She’d tell Isla the truth about her job and what brought her to this parking lot on her own terms.

How do you think we can get Ronan to visit again? She hit send and tapped her phone against her palm.

I’m not so sure I want that.

He’s not going to stop unless someone stops him. I think it’s up to us.

I don’t want anyone getting hurt. Especially not you.

Lu could really get used to Isla caring about her. I’ll wear a helmet.

Ha. Ha.

At least think about it. We’ll get lunch and discuss a plan. You pick the place, so we don’t end up at Chili’s again.

Okay.

Great. I’ll come get you at twelve.

See you then.

Lu felt a few butterflies in her stomach when a winky face appeared on her phone screen. She closed her eyes and rested her head back.
