Chapter 13
âWhere did you find him, again?â asked Doctor Jon Leonard, who Billy Jo realized was the head of the ER.
âA crime scene,â Mark said. âKept in a bunker, locked, and there were other children.â
She stood right beside him, her hand on the gurney where Jay was sitting in an old shirt. He really needed a bath.
The doctor pressed his stethoscope to Jayâs back and listened. âTake another breath for me, Jay,â he said, then looped the stethoscope around his neck. Betty stepped in and had to slide around Chris and Lisa, who just wouldnât go away.
âThanks, Betty,â Leonard said. âI want a full workup on Jay, and I want to get him a gown. How about this, folks? I know youâre all concerned, but itâs getting a little crowded in here. I assure you heâs fineâ¦â
âNot happening,â Billy Jo cut in. âIf you want to examine Jay, Iâm not leaving.â
âThe doctorâs right, Billy Jo,â Lisa said. âSince youâre not officially on call and I am, Iâll stay with him. Iâll find an emergency placement for him.â She already had her cell phone out. Something about this young woman was frustrating the shit out of Billy Jo.
She reached over and pressed a hand to Lisaâs phone. âCan I talk to you a second?
âOkay, folks, how about one of you stays?â Leonard interrupted.
Billy Jo glanced back to Jay, who was taking all of this in, his expression still spooked.
âAnd Iâd like to have a word with you, Chief,â the doctor continued, âand whoever the social worker of record is.â
Billy Jo fisted her hands. âThatâs me,â she said, as she had realized Lisa wasnât going to let it go.
âIâll stay,â Chris said.
Mark pressed his hand on her lower back and stepped out of the curtained-off area, leaving Chris and Nurse Betty. The doctor stopped just off to the side, close to the desk.
âLook,â he said. âJust a quick examination of the boy tells me heâs been malnourished, and what Iâm seeing is evidence of abuse. Heâs how old?â
Lisa had pulled her arms over her chest stubbornly. âFive, he said,â she replied. âCan you tell if heâsâ¦you know, been abused in that way?â
Billy Jo had to roll her shoulders, because she suspected as much but didnât want her head going there.
âWith the evidence Iâm seeing, itâs likely,â Leonard said. âIâm going to call for a psych to come down, as well. I normally donât do this, but we could get him checked into the pediatric ward tonight until social services figures out what to do with him.â
âIâll take him home tonight,â Billy Jo blurted out, then looked over to Mark. âMarkâ¦â
He reached over and slid his hand over her back. âYes, weâll take him tonight.â
âNo, hang on a second here,â Lisa said. âIâm in charge. We have many qualified families he can be placed with. With all due respect, Billy Jo, thereâs a protocol that has to be followed, and Iâm not signing off on a boy going home with you.â She was outright challenging her.
