ON MAY 4, I made my first appearance at the Théâtre de la Monnaie. In spite of my fervent resolutions and my weak voice, I was once again acting in comic opera. With great success. Buoyed by Eugène’s quiet love, by the long and sentimental letters he wrote me, I would find myself serenely dreaming of a balmy and respectable future far from the stage. The idea strengthened me, and I would dress in my costume and walk onstage with the secret knowledge that my days as an actress were numbered.

“It won’t be much longer,” I said to myself every night.

In Brussels I discovered my childhood friend from Douai, Albertine, now married and unhappy. Playing knucklebones on the town walls and in the church cemetery, we had been inseparable. We adored each other. Time and separation had made breaks in our life histories and worn creases at the corners of our eyes. We talked nonstop for hours. But once I had learned about her life and once I had told her the story of mine, our conversations gradually tapered off. Still, I loved feeling her calm and unquestioning gaze on me, her silent and unchanging friendship. Ageless. The past always brought us together. Together Albertine and I ran through the tombs of Notre-Dame.
