Chapter Thirty-Nine

As soon as they left the lagoon behind, Hunter turned to the princess. “He said we’re in Raven territory. Do you know where we go from here?”

Katherina nodded. “We need to continue west.” She sliced her hand through the air, dividing up an imaginary map. “Ravens are here, then the Serpent Clan—who are allies with the Ravens—and then Bear Clan, which is the clan of the clanmaster. If we can reach Bear territory, we should be okay.”

Hunter frowned. “But it seems like we need to go through the rest of the Raven area and then all of the Serpents area. Any idea how far it is?”

“No. Not without a map.” Katherina nibbled her lower lip. “Maybe thirty or forty miles. Some clan areas are bigger than others.”

“So we have at least another thirty miles and probably closer to fifty miles before we reach the clanmaster.”

Katherina cursed. “That’s a lot of walking. It’s going to take us days.”

“At least the terrain around the sea is fairly even,” he said. “But you’re right. It’s going to take us two to three days.”

“Then there’s the food situation,” she growled. She looked Hunter up and down. “You mentioned being able to get food. How do you plan to do that? You don’t have a bow—not even a sling.”

“Ancient paladin secret,” he said with a grin.

I wish you would stop saying that. There is nothing ancient or secret about blasting an enemy with Qi, the sword suddenly broke in. Of course, few who mastered that rare technique would lower themselves to using it on something as mundane as crabs and birds.

Like I said before, the ability does me no good if I starve to death, Hunter said. Or if I’m so weak from not eating, I don’t have enough Qi to use it if I need to.

Mihel grumbled for a moment. I don’t think any master in the history of the paladin order has used it for such a lowly task.

Were any of them shipwrecked behind enemy territory with a self-absorbed princess and had to make a meeting with some clanmaster to forge an alliance and didn’t have time to hunt or trap normally? Hunter asked.

I get your point, the sword grumbled again. I still think it’s sacrilege.

All of my abilities are really just tools. Sometimes I don’t have the right tool for the job, so I use another tool that wasn’t intended for the task but that will still do the job.

Yes, yes! I get your point. But it doesn’t seem like a good use of your power!

Hunter chuckled quietly. Staying alive seems like a good use of the power to me.

Fine, I will not say anything else about it, Mihel snapped.

“You’re doing it again, aren’t you?” the princess said.

Hunter blinked and then realized what she was asking. “Yes, I was talking with Mihel.”

“About what?” she asked.

“About me using one of my paladin abilities to hunt for food,” he explained. “He thinks it’s sacrilege.”

Katherina furrowed her brow. “Why? We need to eat?”

“That’s what I told him.
