Chapter 22
âDo you want to talk about what happened back there?â Soren asked when we stopped at a snowy overlook a few hours after the border crossing.
âNot particularly.â I slid off Poseyâs back and turned away from the general, stretching this way and that.
âIâd like to talk about it.â He took hold of my hand and tugged me toward him. âCelestina, you didnât need to threaten your own life to get those guards to back down. They would have let us through without anyone having to shed a drop of blood. I donât want you to ever feel like you have to do that again. Youâre a guest in my land. Iâll do my duty to keep you safe.â
âWe all will,â Raya said as she walked by. She nudged Gray in the side. âWonât we?â
Gray grunted.
I felt like Gray. This wasnât something I wanted to talk about. I tried to pull away. But Soren tightened his grip.
âEven if it meant bleeding those guards dry, I would do it a hundred times over to protect you.â
I shook my head. âNo. Donât.â
âCelestina. Youâre important.â
âBecause of this magic you think I have?â
âNo. Youâre important because you worry about foolish guards who dare question their general. Youâre important because youâd rather fall on a sword than cause anyone around you a lick of trouble. Youâre important because you pick up pretty rocks alongside the road when you think no one is watching. Gods, Celestina youâre important simply because you are who you are. And the more time I spend with you, the more I want to tear out the throats of anyone who looks at you wrong.â
I shook my head. âYouâre ridiculous.â
âJust when Iâm around you.â He brushed a quick kiss on my lips.
âThatâs the truth,â Raya called out.
I could no longer look at Soren and imagine the man everyone called the Beast of Fein. While he was large and strong, he continually proved himself to be the kindest man Iâd ever met. And no matter how I tried to protect myself I kept falling. And falling. And falling for him.
This is going to end badly, Raya had warned.
Goddess, she wasnât wrong.
