Chapter 32
An erratic wind shredded the rain into shards of splintered glass that hammered March with cold stings.
Beside him the woman sat, head bent, her child in her arms, making the soft, soothing sounds that women knew and men didnât.
Booker was shivering, his knees drawn up to his chest, but whether from cold or fever, March couldnât tell.
The campfire, built in the shelter of an overhang, fluttered and sizzled, spreading little light. Blanket-wrapped men had sought what shelter they could find; only English McGill was awake, the Kiowa in him enduring. Of the Gravedigger, there was no sign.
âMrs. Rowantree,â Booker said, âIâm so sorry.â
The woman looked at him with dry eyes. âSorry for what?â
âThat we couldnât save you.â
âSave me from what?â
âFrom . . . from what happened in the woods.â
âIf youâd tried, youâd have gotten your fool head blown off. But thanks for the sentiment.â The woman looked closely at Booker, piecing him together in the inky dark. âWhatâs your name?â
âLester, maâam, Lester Booker.â
She almost smiled. âFunny, I took you for an Archibald.â
âIt seems that many people out west make that same assumption, Mrs. Rowantree.â
âCall me Eliza. That Rowantree name doesnât set well with me.â
âYou experienced a terrible ordeal. Iâm so sorry.â
âYouâre sorry for a lot of things, ainât you, Lester?â
Eliza held Judith closer, trying to shield her from the worst of the downpour.
âWhen Jeb Rowantree found me, I was working as a two-dollar whore on a hog ranch south of Santa Fe. There isnât anything a man can do to me that hasnât been done a hundred times before.â
âBut you were raped,â Booker said. âRepeatedly.â
âGood for you, Lester. Not many men think like that.â
âLike what?â
âThat a woman who sells her ass for two dollars can be raped.â
Booker felt his cheeks burn and was grateful for the darkness.
âThe man who hit meââElizaâs fingers strayed to the bruise on her cheekââwhat was he talking about, that he wonât raise me to life?â
âYou mean you donât know who he is?â March said.
The woman shook her head.
âHeâs the Gravedigger.â
âOh my,â Eliza said, hugging Judith closer.
âYouâve heard of him?â March said.
âJeb told me about the Gravedigger. He buries people alive, even children.â
âWeâll get out of this,â March said.
âHow?â Eliza looked around frantically. âMaybe I can throw myself on his mercy. Maybe I can begââ
âMrs. Rowantree . . . Eliza . . . the Gravedigger is mad,â Booker said. âHe has no mercy.â
âIâll think of a way,â March said.
âMister,â Eliza said, âthatâs big talk from a man with his legs in shackles and no gun.â
âWhy, donât you know, Eliza? This is the famous lawman Ransom March, fearless Prince of the Plains.â
Booker had laid on his sarcasm with a trowel, but the woman ignored him and clasped Judith closer to her.
Above the rattle of the rain, March thought he heard sobs, but couldnât tell if they came from Eliza or the child.
Either way, he felt helpless.
