CHAPTER
TWENTY-SEVEN
Once the Armenian was in the boot, with the doors locked and the parcel shelf pulled across to hide his unconscious body, Jamie and Hassan went towards the door.
On the first step, Hassan paused.
âWhat is it?â Jamie asked.
âGive me the gun,â he said.
âWhy?â
âBecause Iâm going first. And if anyoneâs in there and ready to shoot me, I want to have the ability to shoot back.â
âSo let me go first,â Jamie replied.
He shook his head. âNo. My gig, my rules. Gun.â He held his hand out.
âYou know every time youâve gone through a door first when weâre together you end up getting shot,â she replied.
âI learned my lesson,â he insisted. âGun.â
Jamie sighed. âFine. But if this is some bravado thingââ
âItâs not,â he said. âI just donât know whatâs waiting for us. And I know Iâll pull the trigger if it comes to it.â
âA lot has changed,â Jamie replied. âItâs been a long few years.â
âI know,â he said sadly, as though he knew what sheâd been through. âWhich is why you want to give me the gun. You donât need to add any more bodies to your conscience. Not for me.â
Jamie handed it over. âI donât think these ones would weigh on me,â she said, stepping up after him. âAnd Iâm not here for you.â
Hassan offered her a final glance, then pulled the door open and stepped inside.
What Jamie expected, she wasnât sure. But what they found was that they were standing in an empty laundromat.
It was still early in the day, and a quick look around showed most of the machines were either partially disassembled, had âOut of Orderâ signs on them, or just looked so run down and dirty, you wouldnât want to put your clothes in them. Which made sense considering the real money was being made upstairs.
A small counter at the back sat in front of a curtained doorway.
Hassan stepped towards it, looking around the room, seeing no people and no cameras.
So far, so good, Jamie thought as they circled the counter, an empty stool sitting behind it.
Hassan pushed the curtain aside gently, peeking through before he went in.
Jamie followed cautiously, the feeling of emptiness in her hands distinct. She didnât like it.
They came to a small room. On the left was another counter, this one with a laptop behind it. Jamie took a quick look, saw there was also a cash drawer there with a key slot, and a card machine too. Guess even brothels had to enter the twenty-first century at some point.
There was a split of four camera feeds displaying on the computer screen. One showing a view of outside the front door, one covering the alleyway outside the gate, another covering a narrow corridor lined with doors, a set of stairs at the far end, and the fourth ⦠which was just black - though the feed was live, the time ticking upwards in the corner. It was just dark wherever the camera was.
She reserved judgement until she knew, but it still gave her a bad feeling.
