Jocelyn Ward

I left early for the coffee shop since Alana had a few calls to make. I put the top up on my convertible to give myself a bit of shade from the hot sun. Jocelyn had said that she’d be waiting for Alana outside, so I didn’t see any need to go into the coffee shop beforehand.

Jocelyn arrived about ten minutes after I did. She sat in her car for a minute or two and just stared out the windshield. After a short while, she picked up her phone and began to play with it. She eventually got out of her car and walked to the front of the coffee shop. There was a small bench by the door and Jocelyn sat down. I continued to watch her from my vehicle. She seemed nervous and fidgety, but not overly so.

I climbed out of my car when I spotted Alana’s approaching. She parked on the opposite side of the lot to me. I timed my walk so that I’d arrive by the bench at the same time as Alana.

“Ms. Ward?” Alana asked.

“That’s right.”

“I’m Detective Alana Hu. This is my associate, Edgar Rutherford.”

“Good morning,” I said.

Jocelyn nodded but didn’t say anything.

“Would you like to talk inside?” Alana asked.

Jocelyn turned and looked inside the coffee shop. She turned back to Alana.

“Yes. It doesn’t seem too crowded in there.”

She stood and we followed her into the shop where we sat at a table near the door.

“Would you like to get a drink?” Alana asked.

“No, not right now.”

Jocelyn’s nervousness had increased dramatically since we’d approached her. She clutched her bag to her as if she expected one of us to try to swipe it.

“There’s nothing to worry about, Ms. Ward. You’re not suspected of anything,” Alana said, apparently reading her apprehension too.

“I’m sorry. I thought all of this was behind me.”

“Thought what was behind you?” I asked.

“My life with Jeffrey. I thought after the divorce finalized there would be no reason to interact with him again. Our kids are grown. I thought we could all move on.”

It was an unreasonable request, I thought, especially considering the length of time she’d been married to the man. There was also the fact that they’d split a fortune. For someone who was worth a mountain of money, I didn’t think she acted like one. The filthy rich have an attitude about them that was missing from this lady. Then again, I hoped that attitude was also missing from me. I was the proverbial pot calling the kettle black.

“You said on the phone that Jeffrey was incapable of killing Amelia. Are you sure about that?” Alana asked.

“Jeffrey and I had some awful fights, but not once did he ever raise a hand to me. I don’t believe he’s capable of killing Amelia or anyone else for that matter. He would have found another way to hurt her.”

“How so?” I asked.

“He’s not against using his money and considerable means to make people’s lives a living hell. But he didn’t do that to her, at least nothing that I heard.
