Chapter Thirteen

I thought I knew what to expect, from the plate that had connected me with my mother, but Fane was a total surprise. I knew I was crouching beside the pool in my world, but in front of my eyes was an entirely different picture.

The pool around me retreated into a circle at the edge of my awareness. Through it, I could see another world. The sky was so bright in comparison to the gloomy cave that my eyes started to water and I blinked against the heat. The sun was orange, the sky yellow and the hot land around me was baked and glowing. I might have walked into an oven. I blinked rapidly to clear my vision. I heard a noise and remembered Cal’s warning about fane guards knowing if I touched one of the gates. I retreated back so the cave was clearer and Fane faded to a distant picture, barely visible through the water in the pool. With my hand in the water, focusing on the Earth side of the gate, I expected it to seal. There was a strange sensation, like something being sucked out of me, and the heat and the dust and the sun vanished, leaving me back on the damp, cold rock ledge. I’d expected a pain, like I’d got from the plate, so I removed my hand tentatively. The cave tilted around me and I planted my hands on the floor, waiting for normality to return.

And without warning, I couldn’t breathe.

Panic set in. My chest was bursting, heart surging against my ribs as I tried to straighten up. I opened my mouth, gasping for a breath that wouldn’t come. I looked around, terrified. Cal looked half bored, not looking in my direction. I clawed at my throat, as though there might be an external obstruction I could remove. I reached towards Thanriel, who immediately understood something was the matter. He stepped forward, then cast a glance at Cal. “Help her,” he snarled.

“Oh, I am,” he replied.

Thanriel touched me and the pain lessened a fraction, but it didn’t stop. A high-pitched ringing started in my ears and my brain froze with horror as I understood my cousin’s words. Cal was doing it, whatever it was. I gripped my anima key and tried to push him away. It didn’t work. Spots of light danced in front of my eyes. My sight went blurry. I changed tactic and threw everything I could at my cousin. He jumped out of the way of a jet of air, metres away in an impossibly short time. The pressure on my throat didn’t let up. Thanriel understood what was happening and ran towards Cal. “Stop this!”

“I need to know how much of a liability she’s going to be,” Cal responded calmly, and stepped two metres in half a second to avoid my next attempt to break his invisible grip.

“Harm her and I will kill you,” Thanriel vowed, scrambling around the ledge to reach Cal.

“I don’t think so.”

Thanriel’s
