CHAPTER EIGHT

He felt a hand on his shoulder, and the wanderer opened his eyes to see Elizabeth leaning over him, her blond hair falling around him. For a moment, he thought he was dreaming, that he had to be but then she spoke.

“I thought you might be dead.”

“Not quite,” he croaked, sitting up and looking around at the inside of the carriage in which they rode. He hadn’t wanted to ride in a carriage. Elizabeth had suggested it, and at first he’d declined, hoping to avoid drawing any attention to them. But then she had argued that while a carriage might draw some attention, his corpse lying in the street would draw considerably more, an eventuality that she had assured him was all but guaranteed if he pushed himself any harder.

In the end, the wanderer had relented, agreeing to the carriage, partially because he saw the sense of what she’d said and mostly because in his exhausted, wounded state walking had become its own special kind of torture.

Not that he felt much better now. Elizabeth had clearly worked on patching up the worst of his wounds and ministering to him while he’d been unconscious—proof of that could be seen in the fresh bandages wrapping his wounds and the medicinal smell filling the cabin—but he was far from mended. The wanderer glanced at the open bag sitting on the carriage floor then up to the woman.

“I had the carriage driver make a stop by the shop so that I could retrieve a few things,” she said. “I didn’t figure you’d mind.”

“Considering that I’d likely be dead if you hadn’t, I don’t see that I can complain,” the wanderer said.

“I’d like to take all the credit, but I’m afraid I can’t,” she said. “The truth is you should be dead. I don’t know what it is that’s keeping you alive. Pure stubbornness, maybe. Or…I don’t know. Perhaps you have the Eternals themselves looking out for you.”

The wanderer’s hand went to the locket hanging from his neck by instinct. “Maybe a little bit of both,” he said, giving her a smile she did not return.

She opened the door, and the wanderer winced as early morning sunlight shone through, striking eyes that had stared at shadows and that only for what felt like an eternity.

Elizabeth climbed out then reached back in, offering him her hands. “Be careful,” she said. “I don’t know what luck’s kept you alive so far, but it’d be a shame for it to run out before you made it into the street and leave the poor driver with a mess to clean up.”

“Yes, the poor driver,” the wanderer said, taking her hands and, with her help, slowly easing himself out onto the street.

“I’ll go pay him,” she said, “Do you think you can keep from falling for a minute?”

“I’ll give it a shot.”

She started away then paused. “Are you sure you don’t want him to drop us off at this Pearl’s you spoke of? I’m sure he wouldn’t mind—it’s just a block away.
