Moon 9, Day 29, 734 D.E.

An eventful summer it’s been; we took a family holiday to the Garden Palace in Rhys. I love it there. I orchestrated tea with the local ladies of rank. It’s quieter in the country, and the smaller lodgings make me feel closer, less distant from the children.

Although Hegren is not yet school-aged, his father has begun to prime him for emperor-hood. Back home for the autumn, tutors now arrive in the mornings to give our son lessons in etiquette, speech, and sport. I dare not speak a word aloud, but it makes my heart hurt. He’s only a tyke, yet to hear him speak to me like a tiny gentleman makes me mourn for the childhood he’s losing so quickly.

When no one is near, I encourage his rough-and-tumble urges in the gardens, permit him to mess his breeches in the dirt and climb trees—though, not too high. He’ll only be young once. Someday he’ll shoulder much responsibility; I’ve got to ensure he has room to breathe at this tender age.

The twins, at least, are still mine to coddle. For now.
