Chapter 5

Sebastian was getting used to the crowds. He had found himself a new knife after looking at what felt like several hundred, but he was happy with it. The steel was strong, the hilt fitted his hand well, and it flew straight, when he threw it. He was now carrying some of the other parcels and packets that contained the clothes Konrad had bought for him and Valiant.

Sebastian was looking at a stall of toys and turned around to ask Valiant if he wanted some, but he wasn’t there. His stomach rolled. Looking frantically around, he could still see no sign of Valiant.

‘Konrad!’ he called. ‘Can you see Valiant?!’

Konrad hurried back to Sebastian worriedly. ‘I thought he was with you.’

‘I don’t care who he was with, can you see him?’ Sebastian said. ‘Hold these.’

Sebastian passed his collection of packets to Konrad, who was already overloaded and ended up dropping everything. Sebastian didn’t care; he was heading off into the crowd, shouting for Valiant. He returned a few minutes later. ‘I can’t find him.’

‘We are nearly back at the carriage,’ Konrad said. ‘We should drop off all of this and then we can search properly.’

Sebastian nodded slowly. He picked up most of the packets and headed off at speed, forcing his way through the crowd, scattering people left and right. He threw everything onto the carriage when they got there.

‘You take the left, I’ll take the right,’ he said, turning back into the crowd.

‘My good man,’ Konrad said to the carriage man. ‘Could you meet us at the far end of the market, please?’

‘Aye, sir,’ the carriage man said.

The sun was setting by the time they arrived at the far end of the market, but there was still no sign of Valiant. Sebastian had made his way through far faster than Konrad and sat waiting in the carriage.

‘Did you find him?’ Konrad said, appearing from the crowd.

‘I didn’t,’ Sebastian said. ‘We need to go back to the circus and get Bayode.’

Konrad climbed in with Sebastian. ‘I should inform the city watch, they may be able to help,’ he said as the driver whipped up the horses.

The circus was gathered around a large campfire having food when the carriage pulled up. Sebastian flung the door open, but didn’t bother getting out. ‘Thembin!’ he yelled, his terror clear in his voice. ‘I need you!’

Thembinkosi, Gow and Fenris leapt up from the fire and came running over.

‘What is wrong?’ Thembinkosi said.

‘We lost Valiant in the market,’ Sebastian said. ‘Would Bayode be able to find him?’

‘I think so,’ Thembinkosi said. He whistled and the wolves came running. The news was travelling through the circus crowd.

‘Where’s Konrad?’ David asked.

‘He went to the city watch,’ Sebastian said.

Bayode and Aziza leapt up into the carriage.

‘We need weapons,’ Fenris said, turning back to the carriages.

The flat of his axe hit him in the chest, the haft being held by Elena. ‘I am ahead of you, husband,’ she said.

Savahanna handed Gow and Thembinkosi their weapons.

‘I will look after Aimee,’ Olaf said.
