HELPING AN AGITATED ANIMAL
When an animal is agitated, there are some easy calming techniques. They include the grounding technique I shared in Tamra and Shayna’s story and simple breathing exercises. Just as we use breathing to calm ourselves, we can use it to help our animals relax. In fact, I suggest that you use these exercises with all your animals as a preventive measure and not wait until they become agitated or are in crisis. Then, should an animal become traumatized or ill, you and the animal will already be familiar with this breathing technique.
Sit calmly with your animal in a quiet place. Talking aloud, ask her to work with you as a team. Begin to take some slow deep breaths, making sure that the animal can hear your inhale and exhale. Continue for five minutes or so, until you can see the physical relaxation in the animals body. That’s it! This simple exercise works wonders in my sessions with stressed and upset animals.
I used breathing exercises with my cat Scooter when I took him to the vet for surgery. The vet tech needed to shave some of his fur to apply a pain patch. When she approached Scooter with clippers, he leaped from my arms. The tech tried again, but with no success. I asked her to wait for a moment while I talked to him. I told him why they needed to shave him and that the clippers would make a funny noise. I put my fingers on the side of his body and jiggled them, showing him that he would experience a vibrating feeling on his body. Once he understood what was going to happen, I asked him to breathe with me. We regularly did our breathing exercises at home, and I knew this would calm him. We began to breathe together—in and out—and he followed right along with me. When I signaled for the vet tech, Scooter sat relaxed and calm as she shaved away. She was astounded and said she wouldn’t have believed it if she hadn’t seen it for herself.
