Dearest Anne,

News from court—the king has made George a Knight of the Garter, and his benefice extends to his family. Edward, Oliver, and Will continue to receive and anticipate much reward in their ventures. I hear that Giles’s scheme for licensing inns has received approval from the king, and Katherine visits Barbara’s dressmakers daily.

As my belly swells, I grow placid, and just as spring is coming to our Yard, so today appeared the first stirrings of the new life of the child within me. Allen is much excited but makes a great fuss of me, concerned that I not overtire myself, while Peter and Jocasta vie for my attention, each hoping for a younger brother or sister. I walk down by the river, I feel as an island, and the water flows around me, bringing me news and providing me sustenance, but not interrupting much the rhythm of my daily life. The Yard’s larders are thriving under my supervision, for Allen knows how dearly I love the land, and charges me with growing as much provision as I can from the old monastic gardens.

Your loving sister, Lucy
