âMEG?â SIMON CAUTIOUSLY approached his mate. He glanced at Nathan, who had summoned him and Vlad to the Liaisonâs Office. Then he absorbed the grim expression on Vladâs face. Finally, he focused fully on Meg, who didnât seem to know he was there. She just gripped her right arm as tears ran down her face. âMeg?â
Prophecy cards were spread out on the big sorting table. Three cards were image side up, revealing at least part of the vision that had Meg in its grip. The first card had an ambulance, a fire truck, and a police car. The second had a front-end loader, a dump truck, and a snowplow. The third card was a hooded figure holding a scythe.
He didnât know if it was the warmth of his hand over hers or just being touched, but Meg sucked in a breath, blinked, and finally looked at him.
âWhat can I do?â he asked.
She sniffled. Vlad set a box of tissues on the table.
After wiping her eyes and nose, she said, âYou asked me what I would like as a present. What Iâd really like is for all my friends to get home safely so that tomorrowâs celebration of the Winter Solstice is a happy time.â She looked at the cards and added softly, âBut I donât think thatâs going to be possible.â
âPut the prophecy cards away now and close up the office,â Simon said. âThe snow is falling fast. You wonât be able to get home in the BOW if you wait much longer.â
âI have some shopping to do, including picking up soup and sandwiches from Meat-n-Greens for tonightâs meal,â she replied. âJester called a little while ago and said he and one of the ponies will be bringing the small sled to take me home.â
âYou head out, then. Weâll lock up.â
Meg gathered her prophecy cards and put them in the box Henry Beargard had made for her. Vlad fetched her purse from one of the cupboards and gently herded her to the back room for her coat and boots.
Simon waited until he heard the back door close before going to the front counter and calling the Chestnut Street police station. While he waited to be put through to Captain Burke, he asked Nathan, âWhat about you? You can stay with us until the storm passes.â
<I will stay around here,> Nathan replied. <I can get food at Meat-n-Greens like Meg is doing and then stay in one of the efficiency apartments tonight. Besides, if Miss Twyla comes back to her den after playing with the pups, she would be alone in this part of the Courtyard. Safer for her if one of us is nearby.>
Several police officers lived in apartments across the street from the Courtyard, including Lieutenant Montgomery, but sometimes even being across the street could be too far.
Simon nodded his agreement to Nathanâs plan as Burke came on the line. âCaptain? Are any of our police friends out on the roads?â He growled softly as he listened. âUnderstood.
