Madigan swept the mascara brush over her eyelashes for the last time and stood back from the mirror, studying herself while screwing on the lid.
So dark.
She rubbed her lips together.
Could use a bit of colour, but I wonât. I donât want to be noticed.
I donât look like myself anymoreâand Iâm not myself anymore. Who am I now?
She avoided her own gaze, zipping her makeup bag.
Buster followed her to her room where she changed into tight jeans and a little black top that showed more cleavage than she would usually be comfortable with.
She became a different person in general when she was out hunting for her attacker.
Different since the attack, but in this way, with her best disguise, she was in control.
Different in the way she told herself the hunter had become the prey once she changed her appearance and was able to camouflage herself in the crowd that frequented the bars where she believed her attacker had been employed.
Able to hunt among the darkness. To convince herself she had the upper hand.
But Iâm running out of options.
She ran the conversation sheâd had with John that morning through her mind over and over, wondering if his friend might prove himself useful.
He kinda looks like me, a little taller. Brown eyes. Dark brown hair. Wear a blue top.
âI prefer black,â Madigan muttered and sat down in the office desk chair, setting her bag on her lap.
She rifled through it, making sure she had her mace and a big can of wet dog food, ready to knock anyone out who might try something. Grabbing her wallet, she checked to make sure she had some cash for gas. Her finger grazed over the picture she kept of her family. She pulled it out, wincing as she usually did when her dead brotherâs face smiled back at her.
Me and Mom in the middle. Drewâs arm over my shoulder.
Her mom had insisted on getting their first family photo the day they legally adopted her. She called it that too. The first real family photo, as if they hadnât been one until Madigan came along. Her mom looked so happy with her dadâs hand on her waist.
He had hair back then. Man, I guess he lost a lot in Florida over the years.
She remembered the joke he made about his hair when he came outside the reception hall to find her and bring her back in the night of the wedding. She grinned, remembering how concerned heâd been that the snow had made her hair wet, relaxing all the curls sheâd taken the time to make.
The snow.
She searched in her purse for her cell phone and hit Graceâs number.
âHey, canât talk. Everything okay?â Grace answered.
âThe photos,â Madigan spit out. âCheck the photos from the time everyone left Cory outside to go back into the hall, and see whose hair or clothes are wet. The snow started falling just before we all went inside, and it stopped when we came back out, so anyone who was outside between then might have some in their hair in the pictures, or their jackets on, or justâ¦just look wet.
