My mind gamboled through many murderous possibilities, but I herded those errant stray thoughts into a locked vault to deal with later. Right now, I needed more details before Melanie’s break was over.

“How did Josephine and her lover cause you to lose your job?”

Her gaze skipped past me to the sidewalk, then she checked the store’s back door. “I’ve never told anyone the real reason I lost the Stanton job.” She’d lowered her voice to a conspirator’s volume. “Suppose I’ve no reason not to now. Josephine asked me to stay on one evening when Mr. Stanton was working late. I’d just settled Archie in his cot and urgently needed the bathroom, so I ducked into the upstairs one. I heard muffled voices and, erm, other nonverbal sounds coming through the cracked-open window from below.” Blotches of scarlet bloomed on her cheekbones. “I didn’t realize who it was at first. Then I heard Josephine saying he had to go before anyone saw them, and the deeper, male voice arguing with her.”

“She didn’t use his name at any point?”

Melanie shook her head. “I don’t know how long she’d been outside with him, but she would’ve known I could come downstairs at any moment. I got a sense the man had turned up unexpectedly, and she wasn’t too thrilled about it. But there was also a smugness to her tone, like she was pleased he couldn’t keep away.”

“Could you see them from the bathroom?”

“It was a small window, and they must have been directly underneath it, so no, I couldn’t.”

She remained silent, and I assumed that was the end of it, but the blush deepened on her cheeks. “I should’ve walked away then and there and minded my own business. Instead, I ran into the Stantons’ bedroom next door and peeped through their drapes. The man was already walking away from the house, so I couldn’t see his face, but I noticed he was wearing a suit.” Her smooth brow furrowed. “That doesn’t help much, does it?”

“Well, a suit rules out the pizza delivery guy and the neighborhood lawn-mowing service.”

She snorted, a sound without a trace of humor. “Josephine wouldn’t have risked her cushy lifestyle to hook up with a tradesman. Anyway, I knew she’d be coming inside any second, so I ran to use the downstairs bathroom—because by then, I was desperate to go. When I came out, she was waiting for me in the kitchen, and she looked mad enough to spit.”

“She suspected you’d seen them outside?”

“Uh-huh. I hadn’t completely closed the drapes in their bedroom, and she’d noticed. She demanded I tell her what I saw, so I lied, saying I’d heard voices and was worried she might be in trouble. I told her I hadn’t seen anyone but her.”

“But she didn’t believe you?”

“Unfortunately, I suck at lying.” Melanie sighed. “If I’d been a better liar, I might’ve kept my job. But I guess she couldn’t risk keeping me around in case I accidentally let something slip in front of Mr.
