As Hera finished speaking, I felt a chill run down my spine. Her cryptic response seemed to suggest that our journey would not be an easy one. To be honest, a struggle was not new to us. We’d been captured by the Sioux tribe and then had to search miles of tunnels filled with the remains of six million Parisians to find a missing person. Throughout our journeys, we’d survived.

“Thank you, Oracle Hera,” Millie said. She tugged on my arm to indicate we needed to leave.

I turned around, and we rushed out. I didn’t want to comment until we were out of earshot of the rest of the crowd. “Did that make any sense?” I asked.

“Not really. While I wasn’t expecting her to give us a name and an address, I think her answer was bogus. Anybody could have said that there are a lot of people who claim to know the future, but few do.”

“I’m questioning if she knew the future,” I said.

“We didn’t ask her about that so we won’t know.”

That was true. “We should have asked what happened to the statue that was stolen right in front of her temple. Will she know that Andreas took it? He as much admitted it.”

“The rightful owner has it back, which is what is important.”

“Yes, but would she know that? Or better yet, would she know that the destruction of Lysandra’s father’s vineyard was a result of a misunderstanding?”

“Edith Emory. We are not here to prove that the Oracle might be a fraud. We came here to find a rogue time traveler.”

“I know, but things like that intrigue me. However, thank you for keeping me focused.” That was almost the same thing I’d said to her.

She smiled. “I’m happy to help.”

“So now what do we do since Hera wasn’t all that helpful?”

“Maybe not to us, but you brought your notebook with you, right?”

“Always. Why?”

“We should write down what Hera said, memorize it the best we can, and then see what Aristotle can deduce from it. Maybe we aren’t thinking deeply enough.”

“I like that idea. I was hoping she’d be more specific, but maybe that’s not how the ancient Greeks do things.”

Because I couldn’t let anyone see a pen and a metal spiral notebook, we returned to the inn.

Out of habit, I looked around in case Lysandra was there needing to tell us something. It was also possible that Christos might show up to the inn to report on a possible job opportunity. Neither were there, so we headed to our room.

I pulled out my notepad. “Okay, what did Hera say?”

“You’re the one with the good memory.”

That was usually true, but not in this case. “I think all those vapors affected my thinking.”

Millie blew out a breath. “All I remember is her saying that many people claim to be able to see into the future, but few can.”

“Right, and that this person will be deceitful and that we have to be careful.”

“Yes, and we have to trust our instincts like we always do.
