If I thought the Sanctuary by night was pretty before, it was even more gorgeous now I was sharing the views with someone. Not just someone. Felicity. The one person that wound me up the most and yet, I’d grown strangely fond of.

I glanced to my right, silently watching her as she tried to convince Kiki along. She looked so adorable talking to the fox and her pocketful of red beans that she was sprinkling along the ground to encourage the ginger kitsune. Seeing her like this, it was hard to believe this was the same person I loathed so much when we met.

“Yes?” Felicity said when she realised I was staring.

“Nothing.”

“Really? Cause you were looking at me.” She waggled her eyebrows suggestively. “Were you having naughty thoughts?”

“You wish. No, I was thinking how intolerable you were when we first met.”

Not in the least insulted, the other girl laughed heartily. “I wasn’t exactly your number one fan either.”

“I noticed that. You’re not exactly subtle with your disdain.”

“True, true.” She paused to let the kitsune sniff all the flowers on the side of the path. “So when did you start warming up to me?”

“Who says I ever did?”

She chuckled sarcastically. “Ha. Ha. But seriously. I’m curious.”

I watched the ginger fox for a moment, bemused by how much she behaved like a regular, non-mythical canine. Peeing on as many bushes as she could, wagging her six tails, sniffing everything in reach. She seemed in good spirits and entertained, which hopefully would help her relax.

“Well?” Felicity prompted.

“What was your question again?”

“When did you start liking me?”

I hummed. “I’m not entirely sure. I think… Ah, I know. When I realised my issue with you was never because I didn’t think you were good at your job. You're annoying but you’re good with the animals.”

“That’s convoluted.” She chuckled as we continued along the path, Kiki happily walking in between us.

It felt strangely domestic, considering we were walking a mythical animal. There was just something about the leisurely stroll, the light conversation, and the happy fox running around that evoked the sense.

I smiled at the other girl, affection filling my chest. “I never thought you were incompetent, just insufferable. Then as we spent more time together, you weren’t as bad anymore.”

“A glowing review,” the other girl remarked, the smile audible in her voice. "No, Kiki, don’t pee on that! Kiki, Kiki. Ahhhh.”

“Too late.” I snorted inappropriately. “I hope Adrian Holt doesn’t mind that a kitsune just urinated on his memorial bench.”

“Sorry Adrian Holt,” Felicity giggled, tugging on the lead to encourage the fox along. “Come on, let’s go, let’s go. Hey. I said, let’s go. Wow, this is harder than walking a puppy.”

“I guess that’s why kitsunes aren’t meant to be pets,” I mused.

A sombre mood drove the giggles away and Felicity nodded. “Yeah, probably. Poor Kiki. I wish the laws punished people harder for having these exotic and mythical pets.”

“I know. I could never keep such a gorgeous animal in a small cage, not even if I was stinking rich.
