I’m in a room draped in black, lit by nothing but a single candle burning brightly against the bleak and all-consuming darkness.

Bathrateri is before me. The long, hooded cobra sways back and forth, flicking her tongue once, twice. She slithers to my feet, where she opens her mouth and hisses, exposing her long fangs. Unexpectedly, she does not bite. She twirls herself around my ankles, tasting my flesh with her tongue.

I bend down and hold my arm out. Bathrateri slithers onto it, coiling around my wrist. Her head turns, and a mirror appears. I walk toward it, holding Bathrateri in front of me. I look into the mirror, and the surface ripples like water as images appear within.

...

Another angry, sharp hiss resonates throughout the room. I glance to my right and see the cobra twisting and snapping in the bag, spitting its venom. “No creature, no matter how beastly, approves of being told what to do,” Toshana whispers again in my mind.

I know what I have to do and I absolutely hate it. But this creature and I are one and the same, both trapped under the same man. We need each other to be free.

Please protect me, I ask Alshams, and then I pull the bag slowly to me. I cautiously begin untying the knots until I see the hooded back of the venomous cobra.

“What are you doing?” Quasim asks, slowly approaching me. I don’t answer. Bathrateri jumps out at me and I leap back, barely avoiding her fangs. But then the snake, seeing daylight, slides up onto my extended, shaking arm, coiling gently in circles around my wrist as if it were twirling up a tree, its head twisting around to look at Quasim as I stand up.

“You must be joking,” Quasim says, and he laughs out loud. “You’re using my own snake against me? You think something I raised from an egg would turn on its master?”

I walk closer to him, as close as I dare, so close that he could cut me in half if he wanted to. “Yes,” I say. “Because she doesn’t want to be kept prisoner any more than I do.”

Quasim grins. “It’s pathetic what people will do when they’re desperate. You’re a failure, Bennua. Even your father knew that before he died. And you’ll die by your biggest mistake.”

He goes to snatch the snake out of my hands. Before I even know what’s happening Quasim wraps his hand around the cobra’s neck and yanks. Without a second’s hesitation, Bathrateri sinks her teeth into his thumb and fills his veins with her deadly venom.

...

“That was very clever, with the snake,” Zahid says. “I would’ve never thought of using it against him.”

“I never killed anyone, before a few days ago” I say, curling up beside him. “I feel filthy. I don’t even know how many men I’ve slaughtered in the past two days.”

“They killed themselves,” Zahid says roughly. “Quasim’s own stupidity and pride brought his downfall. He never should’ve tried to grab a cobra with his bare hands.
