Chapter Sixteen

The Confluence

On the third morning following King Aubrey Allora's coronation, Sir Riven was pulled away from her morning correspondence by the arrival of one of her brother's personal messengers. She took the letter from the hardy woman's hands and bid her warm herself by the fire while she read it, seeing as Lord Riven himself was no where to be seen that morning.

"Hopefully off wooing the little king," Elsa thought to herself, breaking the wax seal on the messenger's report.

The next minute, all thoughts of teasing her brother flew out of her head and her heart began to pump hard beneath her breast, adrenaline surging, and a excited flutter started up in her stomach. Oh, here it was, this was just the bit of news they needed.

She turned to the messenger. "Please, avail yourself of the breakfast downstairs, and take this for your troubles." She pressed a couple of coins into the alpha's hands.

"Thank ye kindly, sir. Will you have a reply for my before this afternoon?"

"I'm not sure yet, please make yourself available though, in case there is."

"'A course." The alpha touched two fingers to her left brow in a brief salute.

Elsa rung the bell for one of the girls assigned to service their guest suite, pulling on a maille shirt and sturdy pair of boots while she waited.

"Is something the matter with yer breakfast, Sir Riven?"

"No, nothing like that. But I was wondering if you could sift whats happened to my brother this morning?"

"I can ask around the kitchens if any of the other gels have seen him."

"Excellent. Do that and report to me once you've located him."

"And will you be here, sir?"

"No, I must speak with the Honorable Winston Dupuis. You can find me in his rooms."

The kitchen girl curtsied and disappeared as quietly as she had arrived.

Elsa only hesitated a second before she threw her long surcoat on overtop her maille, the canvas fabric brushing her shins and the heraldic crest of their family gleaming in well-washed cream from a field of dark blue. Thus armed with her sword and dagger, she went to give Winston the news.

King Aubrey rose early that morning to break his fast in the library with Lord Riven. It was a highly irregular location for such an encounter, but he hoped it would be otherwise unoccupied so early in the day, thereby preventing any nosey eyes from observing them. And a part of him could not help but think fondly of their last meeting in that same place.

He found Lord Riven seated at a table near the back of the room with a plate full of delicate pastries and two hot silver servers.

"I prefer coffee in the mornings," Lord Riven said at the king's curious look to the second drink option.

"You don't find it terribly bitter?'

"I do, but that's part of the appeal. There's something very bracing about starting one's day off with a hot cup of coffee. And it's a cheaper commodity in the north," Lord Riven explained, pulling out a chair for him.
