Chapter 34

Jack stepped out of the café and checked the time on his phone. It was nearly three o’clock. The sidewalks in Telluride were crowded. Cars crawled down the street in both directions. While he was inside, a snowplow had obviously made a pass down Main Street, piling more snow onto the top of the berm already mounded in the center lane.

Something across the street caught his eye—a tall figure in a dark coat, the hood pulled down, hiding the wearer’s face. The man was walking in the same direction as Jack, but had his head turned, watching him. Jack knew instantly—it was the same man he’d seen in the campground.

When the guy realized Jack had spotted him, he casually changed direction and began walking away. But Jack wasn’t going to let him off that easy.

Jack dodged several tourists standing near the café, stepped over a patch of ice, and started across the street. A few seconds later, the man turned and saw Jack following him. He started to run.

Jack lunged forward. A truck appeared from nowhere and blew its horn. Without stopping, Jack threw up a hand and dashed for the curb.

The man was still running, pushing tourists aside. He collided with a small child and reached down and caught her before she fell. He looked back, then ducked into a nearby shop.

Jack wove through the crowd and into the store. Several customers stood looking toward the back. Jack saw the man dash out the door and leap over a handrail into the alley below.

By the time Jack reached the back of the store, the man was gone. Jack slammed a hand down on the metal railing.

Someone had been following him. It was the same man who had avoided him in the campground. Probably the person who had been inside his trailer.
