CHAPTER FORTY-THREE
GLEN GIBB DIDN’T get back to the motel room until past ten o’clock on Sunday evening. It was 14 April. His mind was spinning. It flipped between rage and excitement. He had to stop obsessing over Beth Lane.
He was fixated with her. She’d become a compulsion, occupying every waking second for the last two days. He had to get back control of himself and stop cycling between love and hate. One moment, hope against hope she’d fall for him, fancy him. The next, she was his victim, powerless against his hatred. The difference between Glen and other men turned on by a woman was that he could cut off his feelings. He’d done it before. Anyway, how could you go over the top for a girl who’d once been a Jihadi bride?
Glen Gibb had done his best. He’d put on his ‘Greg hat’. Tried to copy him when he had the hots for someone. Been back and forth expecting to catch a glimpse of her. On Saturday night he’d eaten at the Asian restaurant alone. On Sunday, the library was closed. So, the day was spent driving around like a madman looking for her. He’d even returned to the construction site just in case she’d turned up there and was waiting to see him. But no. Where could she be? Now he was feeling slightly let down, but not too discouraged.
He knew she lived with her aunt, and so perhaps it had just been too hard to get away on her own. What would she tell her? She can hardly tell her all about us? Not until we're truly in love.
Glen had to keep faith in the power of his positive mood over the weekend. He’d started to believe his own hype. Convinced himself he could be like his brother. If at first you don’t succeed, be patient. It was a brilliant feeling. His self esteem had shot up like a rocket. On a scale from one to ten, it had reached twenty-five. Keep imagining it.
He heard the high-speed whir of a hand-held dryer through the walls of the motel. Recalled the dark silky hair that framed her face with the perfect pale skin. Beth Lane could have had a future with him. All she needed was to admit her mistake and that would be it. They’d make the perfect couple.
The fridge in the room had come in handy. He took out an ice-cold beer and ripped off the ring. The bottle of champagne was chilling nicely. If she was still into the Muslim stuff, she’d probably not touch a drop, he told himself. But he’d still pop a cork for her. Surely, she’d appreciate the gesture.
He fought hard to stem the images of Friday night. Her naked body. Full breasts. He mustn’t allow the guilt to bring him down. It wouldn't have reached this point if he hadn't abducted her. Planning dates, life events. Girls liked tough guys. Not men like Also Ran who said sorry all the time.
