Chapter Thirty-One

Children played in the park. Snowballs sailed across the field. Random snowmen provided cover and then disintegrated under attack.

That little girl. Is she out there playing too? At least Anna knew the child lived close by or was in the area temporarily. Anna could post a sign on the message board at Ryan’s General Store with her phone number and ask anyone with any information on the child to call. How many girls in Potrage wore a pink boa as a scarf?

No. That was silly. And creepy. She wasn’t thinking clearly. The stress must be getting to her.

Anna had been positive these notes had to do with that little girl and now… Nine years old. The little girl she saw couldn’t have been older than six or seven. Regardless, she had to help her. She had to stop this.

The news spoke of a different child kidnapped from a Rochester mall. Anna couldn’t recall the details.

Oh my. A thought cut through her. What if the person penning these notes is the kidnapper?

The notes mentioned a six o’clock newscast. And then a nine-year-old girl and eight ties a-binding. If the notes were actually about the little girl Anna had seen, then the author would have to know about the crime beforehand. No. Why send notes and telegraph actions? And why to Anna? It made no sense. God, no. Please, no.

Maybe she was wrong. Maybe she should go to the police.

Two sets of books. Three years ago. Tommy, Hartman, Daisy, Jake. What did they know, and how did this all tie together? Five golden rings. The only verse the same as the song. Significant, but Anna still didn’t know what it meant. The way they interlocked, like the Olympic rings? Tommy, Hartman, Daisy, Jake. Who was number five? Anna?

Leo?

If Leo was involved, then his brother—Vince, the town’s only full-time police officer—would never help her. And Leo had information. He killed Tommy in a hit-and-run, and Leo knew about a body. Her body’s not even cold yet.

The Adams could reel a punch from anywhere. They could destroy her, or Ryan and his business, with the wave of a hand.

Surely, the state police or FBI or somebody worked on missing person’s cases. What if the child wasn’t missing yet? What could she report? She was being haunted? There was that little missing girl in Rochester, but Anna had no proof she tied into this. Six o’clock newscast could have referred to anything.

Anna needed to talk to Ryan. She had to get his take on this. Ryan would never allow someone to harm a child.

Ryan…oh… Anna took a deep breath and let the air flood through her. He can’t be involved in this. No. She couldn’t allow herself to believe that. She, too, didn’t believe in coincidences, but she did believe in fate. Fate brought them together. Ryan needed help with his broken ankle, and she…she needed Ryan and the safety and comfort found in a familiar face.

Anna raced out of the house today and didn’t even leave a message about where she was going or who she was with.
