Harvey walked through the corridors of Colindale Police Station until he reached the open door of DCI Richards’ office. She looked up while talking on the phone and beckoned him inside and to take a seat. He accepted the invitation and sat waiting a few seconds while Richards quickly finished her call and hung up.

‘Well?’ she asked. ‘What did they have to say for themselves?’

He took a deep breath before answering. ‘Both blaming each other – surprise, surprise.’

‘At least they’re talking,’ she said, trying to cheer him.

‘The evidence we have against them – almost better if they weren’t,’ he argued.

‘Do you think it’s going to cause us a problem?’ she checked.

‘No,’ he told her with a sigh. ‘They’re fucked. There’s enough there for joint enterprise to bury the pair of them. Anderson even admitted raping her, although he says he was forced to by Dolby. Dolby’s defence is basically the same, although he swears he never raped her – says the forensic evidence will prove he’s telling the truth, although no doubt it’ll prove the opposite. His lies are more elaborate and well considered than Anderson’s, but they’re lies all the same. Isn’t a jury in the country won’t convict the pair of them.’

‘But if they’re both blaming each other,’ she argued, ‘then one of them could be telling the truth, right?’

‘No, they’re both lying – I’m sure of it now. They planned it together and they carried it out together. Probably convinced each other they could get away with it too. Now they’re resorting to plan B – blame the other guy.’

‘What now?’ she asked after a short pause. ‘We’re about out of holding time. I can’t keep them in custody while we wait for the forensic results.’

‘We have enough without it,’ he assured her. ‘Put it up to the CPS with a recommendation to charge them both with abduction, rape and murder. They’ll be remanded in court in the morning. Then we wait for forensics to come back and put the final nails in their coffins. And may God help them once they’re banged up in Feltham. They’ll be prized scalps for every vicious little bastard with a home-made blade.’

‘Fine,’ she agreed. ‘I’ll speak with the CPS – get them charged. Might as well charge them with false imprisonment too. They’ll want to do a media release – as will the assistant commissioner. They like to get good news out there fast.’

‘Good news?’ he questioned. ‘This is good news?’

‘We caught them quickly and with enough evidence to charge them,’ Richards reminded him. ‘Most would consider that good news.’

Harvey nodded towards the TV playing the news in the corner of the office. ‘Think they’ll give a shit about our… efficiency?’

Richards just shrugged.

‘We’ll barely be mentioned,’ he complained. ‘It’ll be all about the suspects – who they are – their backgrounds, families. Were there any early signs that they’d grow up to be monsters? Then there’ll be the inevitable discussion about what should happen to them
