“I’m having a hard time believing in coincidences,” Archie stated as they moved away from the house. “The fact that the barmaid who was on shift the night Jack Lamb was poisoned happened to be the best friend of the girl who disappeared a few years ago.”

“Yeah, I’m smelling bullshit,” Olivia replied as she drove the car around Newquay, trying to decide on the next course of action.

“So, are we at all thinking that she could have taken Jack’s phone?” Archie asked, wondering if this was part of some revenge scheme for Maria trying to avenge her friend.

“I briefly thought that myself,” she explained with a shrug. “But she was behind the bar. Unless she leapt over it, I can’t see that happening.”

“What do you think is the motive for what she’s doing?” he queried, trying to put himself in the barmaid’s headspace.

“Your guess is as good as mine, Arch,” she responded, glad to be settling into their familiar camaraderie. “But we’ll be sure to ask her when we next see her.”

“And the girl’s diary?” the sergeant asked, still unable to make heads or tails out of the scribbles.

“I’m thinking that the initials were names, but I have no fucking idea what the numbers are supposed to mean,” she replied, already feeling exhausted from the mental effort. What happened to the good old days where people just wrote plain English in their diaries?

“I suppose one thing we should take away is that Stevie clearly had something to hide,” Archie replied, applying his methodical approach to the case. “And it makes one wonder what it was that she couldn’t risk writing it down.” As he spoke, he noted Olivia looking over at him with a faint smile. “What’s all that about?” he asked, a little baffled.

“Oh, nothing,” she answered, looking back at the road, silently relieved that Archie Elmhurst was coming back into his element.
