Fourteen
I made a headband for myself out of the hem of one of the hooded garments. They all laughed at me as I walked around wearing it, but I told them I needed it, that if I exerted myself perspiration would run into my eyes and sting. The Deka knew what my exertions were, as did most of the community by now, so they let it be. On the third day after it had become a normal part of my appearance I tied a large knot into one section and pulled it tight into the back of my neck, fitting the knot against the amphera nerve. My hair was long enough at the back to hide the slight bulge made by the knot. I could feel the tingling above my ear. Now I could operate hands-free. I could switch it off by simply putting my hand to my forehead and pulling the band slightly to one side.
I intended to explore the mine in the early hours of the morning. Gina would be my cover. She would lie awake and stare down at my pillow as if I were still there. She would think of me as if I were asleep, running doubts through her mind, wondering whether I still loved her, whether my affections were fading. I was gambling that they would believe I was still in the room with her, in a deep sleep.
It was just after midnight when I crept out of the room. The passageway was dimly lit, lighting up automatically as I raced along, my bare feet making little noise on the smooth glass floor. All I could do was hope there would be nobody around to see me. If there was I would have to try and talk my way out of trouble, telling them I couldnât sleep and that I thought an hour or so in the pool would calm me down.
But I met nobody. I ran past the communal pool and then past the curtain hiding the entrance to the small pool, and the light started to dim even further. I took one of the emergency lights from its bracket on the wall, remembering how Chlamys had operated it the day he had shown us around the old tunnels. One twist at the fat bulbous end and light energy was released from the storage diamond, passing through another diamond at the narrow end. If you twisted the narrow end the beam would become brighter or dimmer, depending upon what was required.
I came to a dead end, or rather a pile of rocks and debris which must have been a result of the earthquake. Where the hell was the curtain I had seen when Polemedes had hauled me back? Then I remembered that I had only gone about ten or fifteen metres past the small pool that day. I was now at least fifty metres on the other side. I turned and retraced my steps, listening to the sounds of the night, waiting for the shout that would end this suspense.
