N o! This couldn’t be the last page. Was I meant to find a body?

“I can see by your face you’re shocked. You expected more entries?”

“Yes,” I said after I settled back into the chair. “I assumed the book would end with a romantic proposal, not a murder.”

“I did, too,” Andrew said as he skimmed through the copy. “It makes me think the woman you found was in fact the writer. What do you know about her?”

“Only that her name is Kelly Nelson, and she worked at the Daiquiri Den.”

“You have two options,” he said as he put the papers back in the folder and handed it to me. “You can try to forget about the diary and the murder and leave it to the police”

“And the other option?”

“Go to the Daiquiri Den and do a little investigating,” he answered. “Discreetly, of course. I would come with you, but I think her coworkers will talk to you more than they would me.”

“And I bet daiquiris aren’t your drink.” I smiled at him, but the seriousness of the situation hit me. “That’s what I want to do. I can’t forget the diary or the sight of Kelly wrapped in plastic.”

“You have your answer then. Just be careful.”

“Before I leave, did you find anything about my key?”

“You kept it?”

I pulled the necklace out from under my shirt. “I forgot to mention it came with the journal to the detectives.”

He raised an eyebrow at me and said, “On purpose, perhaps? No, don’t tell me. I assume you tried it at the cottage?”

I nodded.

“I would keep it for the moment. Especially since I still haven’t discovered what it opens yet. I emailed a photo to a friend, but he is out of town. Oh, now, don’t worry, we will find the answer!”

My face must have shown my disappointment as Andrew pulled me gently out of my chair and hugged me. How could I have suspected he had anything to do with this mess? It was time to trust my friends again. Unless they proved otherwise.

“Thanks for listening and helping,” I said as I gathered my belongings and headed to the front door. “I’ll keep you posted on my investigations.”

“Please do.” He turned the store sign to ‘Open.’ “I’ll let you know as soon as I hear from my friend. Take care.”

I felt hopeless and confused after my meeting at the police station. The situation was still puzzling but I had a focus now. Time to get a daiquiri.
