Several hours later, long after Frankie had finally gone home, John sat at his desk looking over her tracking chart and thinking about the events of the night. He was a mess. He was a complete and total mess, and he knew it. And if he was being really honest with himself, John knew that he should probably walk away from his position as director of the K-9 program, whether Frankie agreed to marry him or not. Obviously, he could no longer send her into potentially dangerous situations. The stress of it was simply too much for him. When had that happened? He never used to freak out about it the way he had tonight. Even after he knew how he felt about her, he was still able to do his job and not be affected by the thought of her in danger. But tonight he had been nearly useless, barely able to do his job effectively.

He shook his head slightly as he tried to figure it out. He loved his job. More importantly, he loved his involvement in the K-9 program. He had worked tirelessly to bring K-9s to the Eastwood Police Department. In many ways, this program was like his baby. He had campaigned for it for over three years before they were finally able to make it happen. And at the time, his intention was to become the department’s first dog handler himself. But when the assistant Chief of Police sat him down and told him that they couldn’t commit to starting a program as involved as K-9 without having someone in place who was willing to take the reins and head it up, John didn’t hesitate. His belief in the program itself was stronger than his desire to be the one handling the dog. Besides, he had already had his chance when he worked as a K-9 handler in the Army. That was where he had fallen in love with the program in the first place, and where he had first learned what an amazing tool the dogs could be to law enforcement. So he had jumped at the chance to become the program’s director, and he was excited about his job every single day. But the thing he never counted on was falling in love with one of his K-9 handlers.

It had happened so quietly and so naturally that it snuck up on both of them. Almost before he knew what was happening, Frankie had become so important to him. He had thought they were just colleagues. Just friends who shared a common interest in police K-9 matters. But when he found himself thinking of her as his “go-to” person, whether it was to share good news or to have someone to commiserate with when things got tough, he knew there was more to their friendship. And when she let him make love to her that first time, there was no mistaking what was happening between them. And now John knew that his involvement in Eastwood’s K-9 program was about to come to an end.
