âOVER THERE!â TRUDDIE Mae shouted up at her as they continued gliding through the night air. âItâs been stationary too long, nowâs our chance.â
âOn it,â she told her shifting slightly to maneuver them around better as she lowered them down.
It was probably for the best. Truddie Mae wasnât heavy per se, but the odd angle of hooking her under the shoulders and dragging her through the air was beginning to take its toll on her back, arms, and power. The empowerment spell could only handle so much continued use upon her magical reserves before it too would have to be replenished.
Added to those growing concerns and minor inconveniences, she and Truddie Mae had, minutes earlier, shared some very harsh words concerning responsibilities and decisions. It felt ironic and oddly out of place to be working so closely with the same woman that had kicked her to the curb but for Gordyâs sake, and the lives of the others, it was the one thing she could offer before leaving if it meant Charlaâs demise and an end to the essence vampireâs torment.
The wind pushed past them as the tops of trees playfully reached up to tickle the bottom of their feet. Approaching the clearing up ahead, she could see the steady glow of Gordyâs illuminated fingers, the essence vampire directly in front of him. Fear of uncertainty turned to rage, she wanted revenge, she wanted the Asanti to pay.
As they lowered to the ground on the outskirts of the large open area, she could see a small broken building come into view, the road slightly curving off to the left. Memories stabbed at her gut; a wave of emotional loss laughed maniacally as it crashed against her fortitude. The small park, the fire tower, the serene escape into nature, gone and replaced with the bitter regret of one of their ownâs ultimate sacrifice.
âIsnât this theââ
âYes,â she answered Truddie Mae before the old woman could finish her thought. âOdd how we always end up here, or at least I do. I always thought Iâd escape ever seeing it again, evil had other plans.â
âWas thinking the same thing,â Truddie Mae agreed. âI think we need to seriously consider cleansing this place. Itâs got a bad feeling resting on it.â
âOh, we are definitely cleansing it,â she commented. âItâll start with us taking out the trash.â
She took a step forward. To her right came the sound of a carâs engine roaring towards them. Metal screamed, clinked, and clanked followed by Sam shouting. Further back, sounds of breaking limbs and grunts accompanying heavy thudding footsteps trailed behind the car as if a large dog were chasing a mail truck.
âWhat the hell is all that?â
As if on cue, a blinding light lit up the field next to them chasing away the darkness. A car blazed forward nearly running them both down as it bounced and shook heading right for Charla who was in the process of emptying Gordy of his magical essence. Rambling and squeaking, it hurtled itself across the lumpy grass before slamming full speed into Charla and Gordy.
