âCookies?â She looked up. âYou made me cookies?â
We were at the same table as last time, seated in exactly the same seats. But this time it felt different. It felt like a meeting with a friend. âYes. You said chocolate chip was your favorite.â
âIt is. But you didnât have to make me any.â
âI know I didnât have to.â I removed the lid on the clear plastic container. âBut I wanted to.â
âCan I have one?â Her hands rested on the table. Her uncuffed hands. Iâd insisted on it this time, explaining to Clive that it made no sense she was uncuffed at the gardens but not in here.
âYeah, they are all yours.â I pushed the container closer to her.
She peered inside. âYou want one?â
âThey are yours.â
âOh, so you expect me to eat something you made but wonât eat yourself.â
âWhat? Afraid Iâm going to poison you?â I reached for a cookie right as she did. My hand brushed against hers. The spark was undeniable.
Her eyes met mine. âIt wouldnât be unheard of.â
âI even ate one before I came over. You know to make sure they were okay. But Iâll eat another now if that helps. They are good if I donât say so myself.â I took a bite. Yup. Momâs chocolate chip cookies. These things had been legendary with my friends growing up.
âBut you are saying it. That saying has never made sense to me.â She took a bite. âOh. This is good. Really good. I havenât had a cookie like this in, well, a long time.â She closed her eyes.
âYou okay?â
âYeah. Just savoring it. Sorry.â
Watching her like that, her eyes closed as pleasure crossed her faceâmy thoughts went to a far different place, I hurriedly pushed them away. âWhat do they feed you here?â
âThe food is fine.â
âOkay. Just checking. I mean Iâm glad you like the cookies, but your reaction is a bit more intense than I expected.â
âYou made these for me.â Tears welled in her eyes. âDo you realize how thoughtful that is?â
âIt wasnât hard.â Sure I now had a new BFF who was a bit clingy, but it was totally worth it. âWell, Iâm glad you like them. If I can figure out how to get more chocolate chips Iâll make you more.â
âWhy did you make them?â She wiped a stray crumb off her face. My eyes once again went to her lips. The lips I was ready to devour.
âBecause you like cookies.â What else could I say? âReally, it wasnât a big deal.â
âBut it was to me.â
I wanted to wipe away those tears so bad. And so I did. I left my seat, walked around the table, took a seat right beside her, and wiped one off her face.
She leaned into my touch, in such a natural way. Without thinking I brushed my lips against her. It was light, barely a touch at all, but once again I felt it. A spark that created an ache, and I knew I couldnât stop yet. I kissed her harder, soaking up the slight taste of chocolate and something else, something I needed.
