“Cookies?” She looked up. “You made me cookies?”

We were at the same table as last time, seated in exactly the same seats. But this time it felt different. It felt like a meeting with a friend. “Yes. You said chocolate chip was your favorite.”

“It is. But you didn’t have to make me any.”

“I know I didn’t have to.” I removed the lid on the clear plastic container. “But I wanted to.”

“Can I have one?” Her hands rested on the table. Her uncuffed hands. I’d insisted on it this time, explaining to Clive that it made no sense she was uncuffed at the gardens but not in here.

“Yeah, they are all yours.” I pushed the container closer to her.

She peered inside. “You want one?”

“They are yours.”

“Oh, so you expect me to eat something you made but won’t eat yourself.”

“What? Afraid I’m going to poison you?” I reached for a cookie right as she did. My hand brushed against hers. The spark was undeniable.

Her eyes met mine. “It wouldn’t be unheard of.”

“I even ate one before I came over. You know to make sure they were okay. But I”ll eat another now if that helps. They are good if I don’t say so myself.” I took a bite. Yup. Mom’s chocolate chip cookies. These things had been legendary with my friends growing up.

“But you are saying it. That saying has never made sense to me.” She took a bite. “Oh. This is good. Really good. I haven’t had a cookie like this in, well, a long time.” She closed her eyes.

“You okay?”

“Yeah. Just savoring it. Sorry.”

Watching her like that, her eyes closed as pleasure crossed her face—my thoughts went to a far different place, I hurriedly pushed them away. “What do they feed you here?”

“The food is fine.”

“Okay. Just checking. I mean I’m glad you like the cookies, but your reaction is a bit more intense than I expected.”

“You made these for me.” Tears welled in her eyes. “Do you realize how thoughtful that is?”

“It wasn’t hard.” Sure I now had a new BFF who was a bit clingy, but it was totally worth it. “Well, I’m glad you like them. If I can figure out how to get more chocolate chips I’ll make you more.”

“Why did you make them?” She wiped a stray crumb off her face. My eyes once again went to her lips. The lips I was ready to devour.

“Because you like cookies.” What else could I say? “Really, it wasn’t a big deal.”

“But it was to me.”

I wanted to wipe away those tears so bad. And so I did. I left my seat, walked around the table, took a seat right beside her, and wiped one off her face.

She leaned into my touch, in such a natural way. Without thinking I brushed my lips against her. It was light, barely a touch at all, but once again I felt it. A spark that created an ache, and I knew I couldn’t stop yet. I kissed her harder, soaking up the slight taste of chocolate and something else, something I needed.
