Chapter 13
âSo, youâre telling me this Steve person must have ticked off some yet to be identified magic user? And you donât have any ideas?â
I rubbed my temple from behind the counter at the store. It had taken a couple of calls to reach Amelia Ward, Inquisitor and medium by craft, who Iâd worked with some few months ago to determine the cause of my Great Aunt Tabithaâs death. Her flat voice told me she had more pressing matters keeping her busy down in the city.
âIâm telling you; the magical disturbance is no coincidence. There was a burned poppet at the scene, and I found a rune at his place of work. I donât know if Steve got caught in the crossfire of whatever is going on out here or whether this is a spell directed at him gone haywire. But either way, thereâs something big going on.â
âLook, itâs your first year in Australia. Youâre from the South though, right? Surely it doesnât come as a surprise that it gets hot here and trees come down from time to time? Earth magic isnât something we police, Kat. Sometimes the Mother takes our trespasses into her own hands. Disasters happen. Thatâs the way of things. As for the rest, until thereâs a body...â
I made a face in my empty office. âIâd agree with you, exceptâ¦â
âExcept?â
I wasnât sure whether to bring up Billy the Bunyip to the Inquisition. Back home, they left magical entities alone so long as they didnât cause harm to others, and if Billy kept up his unusual behavior, the Inquisition might decide he posed too much of a risk. It was a complication I didnât need, so I came up with the next best option.
âAunty May,â I stated.
âYou have another aunt out here?â
âNo, Aunty May is an Aboriginal Elder in Myrtleglen. I donât know what kind of accord the Inquisition has with first nationsâ people, but she can speak telepathically, so she has the gift as far as Iâm concerned. She says this ainât natural, so this isnât a silly American girl complaining about an unfamiliar climate.â
Amelia didnât respond right away, which I thought must be encouraging. In the background, I heard the muted sounds of telephones and people talking in what I presumed was their office. If there was one thing I knew about Amelia, it was that she disliked the shift to working behind a screen to solve cases, which I hoped meant she was up for a little road trip.
âUgh,â she grunted. âYou know what Iâm dealing with down here? Magical mafia dealing in pixie dust. The bodies are piling up. You know how hard itâs going to be to convince Stella to look into some weirdness in the sticks?â
âBut you will?â
Amelia sighed. âIâll have those names you gave me checked out and see what I can dredge up on the rune and poppet. Iâll have to wait on our experts to give their opinions though.â
âThanks,â I sighed. âReally appreciate your help.â
After ending the call, I decided that Australiaâs Arcane Council must be under-resourcing the Inquisition.
