SHERIFF BECK

P op flew around the buzzing, cramped diner taking orders, filling drinks, and clearing tables, but he stopped long enough to answer Zack’s questions.

“Good morning, Ms. Kaitlynn, Detective. What can I do you for?” His cheeks were flushed with all the exertion.

“Pop, what can you tell me about this young lady here?” asked Zack, pulling a 5x6 glossy photo out of his jacket and held it up.

Pop studied the photo and his eyes flashed in recognition. “Oh yes, she’s been in here, but not for a few weeks, I think.”

Zack leaned forward onto his elbows. “Was she with anyone?”

“Sure,” said Pop, looking from Zack to me. “She met up with Max. Why? Has she got something to do with his murder?”

Zack’s stare fixated on him. “Pop, did you overhear what they were talking about?”

“Detective Knight,” Pop said, tight-lipped, “I don’t make it a habit of listening in to my customer’s conversations. Isn’t anything sacred anymore?”

“I apologize. I didn’t mean to infer you did. Perhaps you overheard an argument?”

“Oh,” said Pop, shifting his body weight from one foot to the other, “I see. Let me think...” Pop nibbled on the pencil eraser and looked down at our table for a moment, lost in thought. “Ah yes, there was one time they grew animated.”

“Animated? How?” I asked.

“It was something about a payment. The lady practically exploded. Max tried calming her down, but she remained adamant.”

“Do you remember anything else from that night?”

“Only that she said lives depended upon it and that it would all be his fault. She stormed off after that.”

Pop placed his pencil behind his ear and glanced anxiously around the diner. A line grew at the front door, and several tables needed cleaning. “Anything else, Detective? I’ve got lots to do.”

“No, thanks for the information.”

Just as Pop stepped away, Zack called out, “Oh, Pop, there’s one last thing. Can we get a coconut cream pie to go?”

“Wimp,” I muttered for Zack’s benefit.

Pop looked at Zack with one raised eyebrow. “A whole pie, huh? Let me get you two. Better safe than sorry. A disgruntled man I wish on no one, my good man. You are a saint to put up with him.”

“It’s Amelia I’m most concerned about,” said Zack.

“Bless her.” Pop held the notepad against his chest. “But don’t fret too much. I’ve already sent her over two apple pies, the no-sugar-added kind. Don’t tell the chief. Poor woman keeps the town running. It’s the least I can do.”
