Five days later, it still looked hopeless. Tom had had no luck at the Windsor Hotel identifying Quayleâs mystery woman. Saul had gotten nowhere keeping an eye on the Widow Quayleâif she knew who her husband had been seeing she was keeping her distance. I was even less than nowhere with my simulations and formulas. Any of the suspects couldâve done it, and I was no closer to figuring out which one of them it was, assuming it was one of those four. Julius, to give him credit, worked harder during those five days than Iâve ever seen him work on a case. There was no loafing, no browsing wine magazines, and I knew he was putting his full brain power on it, but he was getting nowhere. As evidence of his state of mind, each night he selected a poorer zinfandel than the night before for his evening drinking. He tried calling Gormierâs wife to see if she couldâve been the mystery woman rendezvousing with Quayle, but she had an airtight alibi for not only the murder but two of the rendezvous dates. He tried calling other chefs he was friendly with to see if they could point him to other potential suspects. He tried a number of other things too, but struck out with everything.
At two oâclock today he sat for a half-hour grimacing as he tried to force an answer to this murder, but he got nowhere. Iâd never seen Julius give up a case before, but when he picked up a wine magazine and began browsing it, I knew he was as much as waving a white flag of surrender.
âThatâs it?â I asked. âA little adversity and you throw in the towel?â
âIt appears that way,â Julius murmured.
âForget about freeing an innocent man. What about Bouillabaisse ala Sophie? Are you giving up on it this easily? One of your raisons dâetre?â
âIâm sure Ms. Morley will do a fine job preparing it,â Julius grunted out, the muscles along his mouth tightening. His fingers began drumming the surface of his desk, which showed his growing annoyance. âArchie, sometimes you need to admit when youâre beat.â
I knew better than to push it, at least if I didnât want to be turned off, which I didnât. In the funk he had fallen into heâd take any provocation from me as an excuse to turn me off. So for the next two hours I avoided saying anything to him. Then inspiration struck. It was like a blast of electrons hitting my processing unit and creating an almost blinding light. Or an illuminating light. It was so obvious, and I couldnât help telling Julius, âHa! I figured it out! In fact, I just sent you an e-mail that solves this case!â
âIâm not in the mood for this,â he warned me.
âYou donât believe me? Check your e-mail!â
Juliusâs expression went from suspicious to dubious as he reached for his computer mouse. He stopped with his fingertips inches from it, his facial muscles hardening as if he were a marble sculpture.
