Chapter Five

Kinsey was in the room she had been assigned originally, where all her clothes were despite having spent her nights with Faron. Her suitcase was open, and she was half-packed as tears streamed down her face when Faron entered the room. She did her best to ignore him, continuing to put things methodically in the suitcase.

“Kinsey.”

She didn’t even look up. She kept her gaze focused on the growing pile of clothing, finishing emptying out the dresser in the closet before moving into the bathroom. He followed her as she started gathering her toiletries, and she still refused to look at him.

He reached out, putting a hand on her shoulder, and she turned on him with such ferocity that she didn’t recognize herself as she practically growled, “Don’t touch me.”

He hesitated, but his hand didn’t move away from her shoulder. “My father…”

She put her hands on her hips as she shrugged off his hand. “What about your father? Was he lying about the engagement?”

Faron sighed. “He wasn’t lying, but it’s a business negotiation, and we’ve not yet reached the point of being engaged. I swear to you, I haven’t been leading you on or cheating on her with you. There’s no love between Evelyn and myself, and there’s no formal engagement.”

Kinsey balled her hands into fists as she glared at him. “That makes me feel so much better. You’ve known this engagement was going to take place, and yet you’ve indulged in this affair with me. I can only conclude it was a brief fling, perhaps maybe your last attempt to have some fun before your loveless marriage. Did you ever think I wouldn’t want to be part of that deal?”

He rushed forward, pulling her into his arms. She resisted briefly, something inside urging her to melt against him even as her pride maintained a stiff spine, and she averted her head when he tried to bring his face to hers.

Instead, he nuzzled her cheek for a moment, and she closed her eyes and whimpered at the pleasure it evoked. She was tempted to concede, but she couldn’t allow herself to do that. She refused to be the other woman, even if it was a short-term fling before their engagement was officially announced.

“I’m not marrying her.”

Kinsey laughed in disbelief. “Sure, you aren’t. After you sweettalk me to your bed again, you’ll use me for however long you want and then send me on my way so you can marry her anyway. I’m not a fool. I won’t fall for that, and I won’t be party to this.”

He let out a growl of frustration, and it was a pure, animalistic sound reminiscent of a cat rather than a human. Her eyes widened at the noise, and she turned to look at him despite her better instincts.

His eyes were completely gold now, the sclera almost invisible, which should’ve been impossible, since they were dark brown. She blinked in confusion that only intensified when he said, “You’re my mate, and I’m claiming you. To hell with the consequences.
