Good Academic Recommendation — Madeleine

Dear Sir or Madam:

During my twenty years of teaching American literature at this university, I have rarely looked forward to entering a classroom more than when Madeleine Shaw was sitting in the front row, alive with anticipation and having meticulously dissected the reading assignment. Quite frankly, she was the only student in my introductory American Gothic Literature class who was better versed in Edgar Allan Poe than I. While not flaunting this fact (which astute fellow students picked up on in no time anyway), she nonetheless relished the academic sport of lively repartee and intellectual exchange. Other students in the class were riveted as Madeleine single-handedly turned a course that otherwise could have threatened — on paper at least — to be a ho-hum curricular mandate into an adventure that left all of us anticipating what the ninety minutes would hold in store each time. Students who considered themselves unforgivingly “analytical” began to revel in what one freshman described as “using the other side of my brain — thanks to Madeleine.”
