Drives / Negative Feedback Systems

Physiological drives can also push organisms to act in certain ways, as is the case when we are thirsty. A drive is an urge originating from a physiological discomfort such as hunger, thirst, or sleepiness. Drives can be useful for alerting an organism that it is no longer in a state of homeostasis, an internal state of equilibrium. They suggest that something is lacking: food, water, or sleep, for example. Drives often work through negative feedback systems, which are abundant in human physiology. The process of negative feedback works by maintaining stability or homeostasis; a system produces a product or end result, which feeds back to stop the system and maintain the product or end result within tightly controlled boundaries. Biological examples of negative feedback include regulation of blood pressure, blood glucose levels, and body temperature. These biological systems can have an important impact on behavior. For example, if blood glucose drops because you haven’t eaten in hours, you will feel hungry and have a strong drive to eat. If your temperature begins to drop, you will feel cold and have strong drive to seek warmth.
