Iobi barely managed to catch Oczethne before she cracked her skull open. He was stunned by the ferocity of the fire as it rose, and was pushed by the wind back towards the ruins. Tarian was out pacing Emuire as they both came over, dark against the brightness.

The lad made no concession to the shaft poking out of him other than to hold the arm on that side still as he loped down with a grimace on his face. Emuire came next, nodding at Iobi as they all headed to the temple.

They may have lost two bags, but at least they were alive.

Shifting Oczethne over his shoulder, Iobi’s mind was already starting to formulate how to close the way behind them. He might be able to do it. He’d have to bleed himself like a stuck pig, but he could do it.

Iobi had nearly reached the temple opening, wide and dark. Then a massive figure leaped over his head, stirring Oczethne’s loose curls against his cheek. Something inside him quailed from it, his feet stopping as his gaze turned up.

There, above the entrance, with a paw curling over and scraping against the arch, was the Wolf-Skin in all her radiance.

Her tail swept out as she leaned down and growled. “I smell her. One of mine. Where is she?”

Mouth gone bone dry, Iobi let out a quivering breath. Reaching slowly for his amulet, he was stopped by an increase in the volume of her snarl. She was a god of his land. Even if it wasn’t her stars that he’d been born under, it was still enough to overwhelm him and make him want to weep from awe.

Her eyes were so impossibly bright as they stared into him. “Where is she?”

The dark nose was only an arm’s length from his face. The Wolf-Skin’s breath smelled of snow and fresh meat. Then he noticed something, a blemish in the light on her belly. It looked like a scar of utter black, and it bent the light around it.

Iobi swallowed hard, not having time to wonder what that might have meant. He caught movement in the shadows beneath the god. He didn’t dare look away from the ivory teeth the size of his hands.

His best acting wasn’t good enough however. She stiffened, inhaling some scent. “There you are. Come back to—”

As the god shifted to look down below, a bright slash of metal burst from the darkness. The wolf yelped in surprise and pain, pulling back as pure moonlight fell from a cut on her snout. Emuire’s eyes were wild as she gripped a small dagger dripping with a god’s blood.

Iobi didn’t waste time gawking. He raced forward as smoke and ash clouded the air, and the Wolf-Skin cursed as only a beast could. It shook something inside of him, causing him to stumble. But he reached for his amulet, piercing it through his glove. She wasn’t his god. He didn’t have to obey.

Emuire didn’t have that barrier. She shrank back into the dark with a thin wail, clutching her hands over her ears before being lost in shadow.
