Rachael was fast and smooth. She had to be to unsnap my holster without me feeling it, and to draw my pistol â backwards â and turn it in her hands before I had a chance to react. My stomach flipped as I stared into the barrel of my gun and wondered what Gaba would say when he found out what had happened.
Even then, at gunpoint, I almost laughed at my priorities. I was less concerned about what Gaba would do than the verbal reprimand I expected to receive, followed by another from my supervisor, Sergeant Duneq, when Gaba gave him the good news.
âOkay, honey,â Rachael said as she waved the gun in my face. âI donât know what just happened, but it looks like you had a whole conversation with yourself in about two seconds.â
âYes,â I said.
âBut youâre okay?â
âI donât know,â I said. âAm I?â
âSure.â Rachael nodded. âIâm not going to hurt anything more than your pride, honey. But I am going to need that big fancy gun of yours. So, if you donât mind, youâre going to unsnap that big boy from the sling and hand it over.â Rachael waved the gun again, adding, âSlowly. Okay?â
âYes,â I said.
Rachael kept my gun steady as she pointed it at my face. I unclipped the MP5 and slowly handed it over. It did feel a little lighter than usual, but I was too busy disarming myself to give it much thought. Rachael took the submachine gun and immediately slipped my pistol into the loose pocket of her housecoat to get a better grip on the MP5.
âNow whoâs outgunned?â she said with a grin.
I sighed and said, âThat would be me. But have you thought this through?â
âHonestly, honey, I donât often think further than my next cappuccino. But seeing as you asked, I can tell you.â
She took a breath, shifted her stance, and I waited.
The midnight sun dipped behind a distant mountain peak to cast a short-lived shadow on the starboard side of Dreamcaster. I guessed that Rachael had been in Greenland long enough to know the sun was on her side, and whatever she needed to get done could be accomplished in daylight. But Rachael seemed too busy thinking about just how much she intended to tell me about her plans to notice, and I leaned back in my chair, sensing no immediate threat to my life, just a warning.
âOkay,â Rachael said with a nod, as if she had made a decision. âHereâs the plan, Petra. You ready?â
âI am,â I said.
âOkay then. Thatâs good. Because youâre a big part of making this plan work. Soâ¦â Rachael took a breath and then glanced at the door, as if she was suddenly aware that it might burst open at any minute. She adjusted her position and moved to put me between herself and Gaba if he was to breach the cabin. âWe have some errands,â she said.
âSuch as?â
âJust errands, honey. Things we need to get done.â
âYouâre not planning on escaping, then?â
Rachael laughed and said, âYou told me yourself, Petra.
